Compress GoPro Video on Mac: Shrink 4K Clips Safely

Your GoPro clips are huge, your cloud drive is full, and the group chat will not take a 3 GB ride. Smol lets you compress GoPro video on Mac: drop in the whole day, pick High or Web quality, step 4K down to 1080p when the screen allows, and get a copy that is far easier to store and send. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Drop a whole card dump in and compress every clip in one run
  • Output H.265 for the smallest copy or H.264 for the widest playback
  • Step 4K down to 1080p for sharing, keep the original for the edit
  • Runs on your Mac, with no upload, no account and no file quota

To compress GoPro video on Mac, drop the clips into Smol, choose H.265 output at High quality, and lower the resolution to 1920 wide if the footage is headed for a phone or a laptop. That copy is a fraction of the original, and the originals stay untouched by default. The table shows which setting fits each job.

What is GoPro file size per minute?

A file’s size is its bit rate times its length: megabits per second, times 60, divided by 8, gives megabytes per minute. The table uses round example rates, not GoPro specs. Find your own by dividing a clip’s size by its length.

Arithmetic only: example bit rates turned into size per minute and per hour (decimal MB and GB)
Example bit ratePer minutePer hourNotes
20 Mbps150 MB9 GBAn example moderate rate
50 Mbps375 MB22.5 GBAn example mid rate
100 Mbps750 MB45 GBAn example high rate
120 Mbps900 MB54 GBAn example very high rate

Actual rates move with the scene, so two clips with the same settings can differ. A 10-minute ride at 100 Mbps is about 7.5 GB, which is why a full card turns into a storage problem fast. For how Smol handles 4K in general, read how to compress 4K video on a Mac.

Why does the camera split my recording into several files?

Long recordings can arrive as several files, and one possible reason is the file system. FAT32 caps a single file at 4 GiB, while exFAT allows files up to 2^64 minus 1 bytes. Check your camera’s manual for how it splits files. Smol compresses files one by one and has no join feature, so merge the chapters in your editor first if you want a single file.

Does GoPro HEVC on Mac play without conversion?

Yes, on any Mac running macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later, per Apple’s page on HEIF and HEVC media. Apple adds that these formats offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage. Older systems may need H.264.

That makes HEVC a good output for your own archive and H.264 the safer choice when you do not know the viewer’s player. If a clip will not play for a friend, re-encode to H.264. Apple documents a no-install route too: in QuickTime Player, choose File, Export As, and change Smaller File Size (HEVC) to Greater Compatibility (H.264). Smol can do the same for a whole folder at once. The trade-offs between the two codecs are in H.265 vs H.264.

Which settings reduce 4K GoPro size the most?

Lower the resolution first, then raise the quality number only if the result looks soft. On the one clip we measured, a 1080p encode came out at 13.4% of the 4K encode, and on a 1080p display the two scored VMAF 99.94 and 99.97, a gap you would not see. That clip was a four-second synthetic test encoded with ffmpeg at CRF 28, not with Smol, so treat it as a direction, not a promise. On a 4K television the same pair scored 90.04 against 99.70, which is a visible drop. Full method in the 4K compression guide.

Smol also accepts an exact CRF from 0 to 63 and nine speed presets, if you prefer to tune by hand. A higher CRF means a smaller, softer file. Test two values on a short stretch of your own footage before committing a 40-clip folder. Smol sets quality and resolution, not output bytes, so it cannot promise a clip lands under a cap. For a 25 MB cap, check the output size and go smaller if needed. Our email guide aims at 15 MB, which for one minute leaves a video bit rate budget of roughly 1,904 kbps.

How do I compress GoPro video on Mac in bulk?

Copy the card to your Mac first, then run the folder once. Smol writes a copy beside each original, so the camera files are safe by default.

  1. Copy the card to a folder on your Mac

Import with Finder or your usual app. Keep the originals until you have watched the compressed copies.

  2. Drag the folder into Smol

Videos and photos from the same trip can go in together.

  3. Choose MP4, H.265 and High, or H.264 and Web

Use the table above. Set resolution to 1920 wide for sharing, or leave it at the original for an archive.

  4. Run it and read the per-file savings

Smol shows the size of every output. Find the largest one if you have a cap to meet.

  5. Play two clips before you delete anything

Scrub through a fast section, such as a downhill run. Motion and fine texture show compression first.

The completion screen after a batch: size before and after, share saved, and time taken.

Other ways to run it: a Finder right-click action, or a watched folder for fresh, unoptimized files only, since watched folders can make already-optimized files larger. The batch details are in batch compressing videos.

What if my GoPro video is too large to share?

Cut it, drop the resolution, then compress. A personal Gmail account allows 25 MB per message, which is about 2 seconds of the 100 Mbps example, so most action clips need a link or a shared folder instead of an attachment.

  • Trim the clip to the best 20 to 30 seconds in QuickTime Player or your editor before compressing. Length is the biggest lever.
  • Use H.264 at Web quality and 1280 wide or lower for a chat app. Check the output, because Smol does not target a byte count for video.
  • For anything over the email cap, share a link. Messaging apps set their own limits, and our page on WhatsApp video size covers that route.
  • YouTube is rarely the problem: its help page allows 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Compress for upload speed, not for the limit. See YouTube upload compression.

What do GoPro owners use to shrink video today?

Free tools come first, and they work. QuickTime Player is built in and handles one clip at a time. HandBrake is free and thorough, with a settings maze. Smol suits the folder-at-a-time job.

If HandBrake is already your tool, there is little reason to switch, and our comparison says where it is stronger. Smol costs $29 once, with no subscription, per-file quota or daily cap. See the pricing page.

When is Smol the wrong tool for GoPro footage?

Smol is not for every GoPro job. Pick something else in these cases.

  • You need it fast. Smol is not the fastest tool, so a big folder takes a while.
  • You edit in Final Cut or Premiere. Cut from the originals and export once. Compressing before the edit adds a generation of loss.
  • You need to join chapters or stabilize. Smol compresses files; it does not merge them or edit the picture.
  • You use Windows or Linux. Smol is macOS only.
  • You need a guaranteed byte size for video. Smol has no size target for video. Test, check the result, and adjust.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress GoPro video on a Mac?

Copy the clips to your Mac, drag them into Smol, and choose MP4 with H.265 at High quality for an archive, or H.264 at Web quality for sharing. Lower the resolution to 1920 wide if the footage will be watched on a phone or laptop. Smol writes a copy and leaves the original.

What is GoPro file size per minute?

It equals bit rate times 60 divided by 8. At 100 Mbps that is 750 MB a minute, and at 120 Mbps it is 900 MB. GoPro’s real rate varies by mode and scene, so divide a clip’s file size by its length in minutes to get your own figure.

Does GoPro HEVC play on a Mac?

Yes, on macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later, according to Apple’s support page on HEIF and HEVC media. Older Macs and some other players may not play it. For those, export to H.264 with QuickTime Player or compress to H.264 in Smol.

Why is my GoPro video too large to share?

Action cameras can record at high bit rates, so one minute can run to hundreds of megabytes, while a personal Gmail account allows 25 MB. Trim the clip, lower the resolution to 1080p or 720p, and compress with H.264 at Web quality. For anything longer, share a link instead.

How do I reduce 4K GoPro size without ruining it?

Drop the resolution to 1920 wide when the screen is 1080p or smaller, then use High quality with H.265. In our test, a 1080p encode was 13.4% of the 4K encode and scored the same on a 1080p display. Keep the 4K original for 4K televisions.

Does Smol upload my GoPro footage?

No. Smol runs on your Mac, with no upload, no account and no server. It requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon, or macOS 14 or later on Intel. Solo costs $29 once for one Mac, with free updates.
