Smol for Amazon sellers

Amazon Product Image Requirements: Size, Format and White Background

Amazon wants a pure white main image, at least 1,000 pixels on the long side for zoom, and A+ Content images of 2 MB or less each. Camera exports need resizing first. Smol resizes and compresses a whole listing set on your Mac in one drop, and uploads nothing.
  • Resize a shoot to 1,600 to 2,000 pixels on the long side
  • Get A+ Content images under the 2 MB per-image cap, then check
  • Mix JPG, PNG and iPhone HEIC in one batch, output as JPG
  • Originals stay untouched by default; the work stays on your Mac

Amazon product image requirements come down to four rules: a pure white main image (RGB 255, 255, 255), at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side so zoom works, JPEG as the preferred format, and the product filling 85 to 100% of the frame. A+ Content images add a 2 MB cap per file. Each limit has a source below, with the Smol setting that fits it.

What are the Amazon product image requirements?

The rules are: pure white main background, the product filling 85 to 100% of the frame, a long side of at least 1,000 pixels, JPEG preferred, and at least one image per listing. These figures come from posts by Amazon staff accounts on Seller Central’s forums and from Amazon-hosted A+ guides. Confirm them in Seller Central before a big upload.

What is the right Amazon image size in pixels?

Aim for 1,600 to 2,000 pixels on the long side. Amazon accepts 500 to 10,000, needs more than 1,000 for zoom, and calls 1,600 or more optimal. Anything past 2,000 mostly adds file weight beyond what zoom asks for.

A 4032 × 3024 iPhone frame is about 12 million pixels. Fitting it inside 2000 × 2000 keeps about a quarter of them, so the file shrinks before quality is touched. Smol does that by default: its image resize fits inside 2000 × 2000 unless you change it, and fit mode scales the whole picture without cropping. Square listing images fit inside the box the same way, so a 4000 × 4000 shot comes out at 2000 × 2000. Set the maximum to 1600 if you want the leaner file.

One thing Smol does not do is pad a photo onto a canvas. If your frame is 4:3, it stays 4:3. Amazon’s fill rule is about the product inside the frame, which you fix at the shoot or in an editor, not in a compressor.

How do I get the Amazon main image white background right?

Make the background exactly RGB 255, 255, 255 in your editor, export, and confirm with an eyedropper after compression. Amazon staff list pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) for main images.

Smol does not remove or paint backgrounds, so do that step first in Photoshop, Pixelmator Pro, Affinity or your cutout service. Compressing is a second step, and any re-encode can nudge pixel values, most visibly near edges. Re-encoding can nudge pixel values, so check rather than assume. Our starting point for main images is quality 85 to 90: JPEG chroma is 4:2:2 at 80 to 85 and 4:4:4 from 90, which keeps color edges cleaner. These are starting points, not tested thresholds.

Is there an Amazon image file size limit?

For A+ Content, the Premium module guide caps each image at 2 MB. The main-image rules cited above list pixels and formats. Seller Central’s upload screen may enforce its own number, so watch for errors.

Practical advice: keep listing images lean anyway. Smaller files upload faster across a 50-ASIN catalog, and zoom depends on pixel size. Smol sets quality and pixel size, not output bytes, so it cannot promise a file lands under a cap. Sort the output folder by size and rerun any that miss at a lower quality.

Image target-size mode exists too: type a size from 4 to 4096 KB and Smol aims for it. It is a band, not a ceiling, and slow (about 28 seconds for one 768 × 512 image). Save it for the stubborn few.

What is the A+ Content image size?

It depends on the module. Premium modules need at least 1464 × 600 pixels on desktop for Full Image, and each image must be 2 MB or less. Standard modules list slots such as 970 × 300, 300 × 300 and 400 × 400.

The Premium guide is dated 2023, so open A+ Content Manager for the current minimums. The guide also says oversized images are resized to fit the module, but not enlarged if they are smaller than its limits, so don’t upscale to hit a minimum when you shot too small. Smol can upscale 2×, 3× or 4×, but a re-shoot is better for product detail. Text-heavy banners saved as PNG can run large; compress those as JPG only if the text stays crisp, otherwise keep PNG and lower the pixel size.

Which Smol settings fit an Amazon listing set?

Resize first, then quality. Put the whole folder in, set one preset per job type, and spot-check the output. Presets live on one Mac, so a team writes the numbers down and recreates them on each machine.

For scale, on 24 small Kodak test photos (768 × 512 JPEGs, default settings), Smol made the JPEGs 69.3% smaller. Those are film scans, not product shots from a 50-megapixel body, so treat the figure as scale, not a promise. Method on the benchmark page.

How do I prepare a full Amazon image set on a Mac?

  1. Finish edits first

Cut out the product, set the background to RGB 255, 255, 255, and export at full size from your editor. Keep these masters.
  2. Drop the folder into Smol

Drag the whole folder in. JPG, PNG, HEIC and camera RAW can sit in one batch.
  3. Set Compress, JPG, quality and maximum dimension

Use the table above. Leave metadata stripping on so EXIF and GPS are removed.
  4. Run it and sort by size

Originals stay in place by default; copies get a _compressed suffix. Sort the outputs by size and rerun any A+ image over 2 MB at lower quality.
  5. Spot-check one main image

Sample the background in Preview or your editor and confirm it still reads pure white, then upload.

When Smol is the wrong tool

  • You need the background made white. Smol does not cut out or repaint backgrounds; use an editor or a cutout service first.
  • You need pixel-identical files. Smol always re-encodes images and has no lossless mode; ImageOptim is the answer for lossless trimming.
  • You are on Windows or Linux. Smol is macOS only.
  • You need a guaranteed file size. Smol sets quality and pixels, so you check the result; target-size mode is a band, not a hard ceiling.
  • You need a server-side pipeline for a large catalog feed. Use a build-time image library, or the Smol API for server jobs.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Amazon product image requirements for the main image?

Amazon staff state the main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product filling 85 to 100% of the frame, and at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side for zoom. JPEG is preferred, with TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF also accepted. Check your category rules in Seller Central.

What Amazon image size should I use?

Amazon accepts 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side, needs more than 1,000 for the zoom feature, and describes 1,600 or more as optimal. A long side of 1,600 to 2,000 pixels covers zoom without a heavy file. Set the maximum dimension in Smol accordingly and check the result.

How do I keep the Amazon main image white background pure white?

Set the background to RGB 255, 255, 255 in your editor before export, then compress at a higher quality such as 85 to 90 and sample the result with an eyedropper. Compression can shift pixel values slightly, so verify one file before you upload the batch. Smol does not edit backgrounds.

Is there an Amazon image file size limit?

Amazon’s Premium A+ module guide caps each A+ Content image at 2 MB. The main-image rules cited here list pixel sizes and formats. Seller Central may enforce its own limit at upload, so keep images lean, check the file sizes after compressing, and read any error it shows.

What is the A+ Content image size?

It varies by module. Amazon’s Premium guide lists 1464 × 600 pixels as the desktop minimum for Full Image and 600 × 450 for mobile, with a 2 MB cap per image. Standard modules use slots such as 970 × 300 and 300 × 300. Confirm current numbers in A+ Content Manager.

Can Smol get an image under 2 MB for A+ Content?

Usually, by lowering the maximum dimension and quality, but Smol sets quality and pixel size rather than output bytes, so it cannot promise a file lands under 2 MB. Run the batch, sort by size, and rerun any file that misses at a lower quality. Target-size mode is also available for stubborn images.
