eBay Photo Size: Exact Limits and How to Meet Them on a Mac

eBay wants listing photos of at least 500 × 500 pixels, recommends about 1600 × 1600, takes up to 12 MB each and allows 24 photos. Phone shots are far bigger and slow every upload. Smol resizes and compresses a whole listing in one drop on your Mac, so photos stay sharp and nothing leaves your machine.
  • Fit a whole listing to eBay’s 1600 px recommendation in one drop
  • Turn iPhone HEIC into JPG with quality you choose
  • Keep photos sharp: no upscaling surprises, no over-compression
  • Strip GPS and camera metadata by default before you post

The eBay photo size to aim for is about 1600 × 1600 pixels as a JPG. eBay’s help page sets a 500 × 500 pixel minimum, a 12 MB cap per photo and up to 24 photos per listing. Here is each limit with its source, and the Smol setting that meets it.

What are eBay’s picture requirements?

eBay publishes four numbers that matter: a 500 × 500 pixel minimum, about 1600 × 1600 recommended, 12 MB per file and 24 photos. They come from eBay’s own help and developer pages, read on 11 October 2026. Check your category and region before a big upload.

One caution: eBay’s help page gives pixel sizes as a minimum and a recommendation, not a ceiling. Staying near 1600 keeps you well inside whatever the uploader allows.

How many photos can you add to an eBay listing?

You can add up to 24 photos to most eBay listings at no cost, and a multi-variation listing allows 12 per variation. Motor vehicle listings follow the vehicle package you pick.

Twenty-four photos at the 12 MB cap would be 288 MB, so phone-size originals can make a listing slow to upload. Smaller photos upload faster. File sizes depend on the photo, so check the output sizes in Smol’s results list.

More photos is not the goal; coverage is. Front, back, label or serial number, flaws, scale against a ruler and any accessories. Sellers of cards, clothing and parts can compare how other marketplaces handle sets in product images for online stores and Poshmark, Depop and Vinted photos.

Which Smol settings give the right eBay photo size?

Set output to JPG, quality 80, and the maximum dimension to 1600. Smol resizes images to fit inside 2000 × 2000 pixels unless you change it, so lowering that to 1600 matches eBay’s recommendation. Fit mode keeps the whole photo with no cropping.

Metadata stripping is on by default, which removes EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP, so your home location does not ride along on listing photos. It also removes copyright fields, so switch it off if you need them. Background in stripping GPS from photos.

For scale only: on 24 small Kodak test photos (768 × 512 high-quality JPEGs, default settings) Smol’s JPEGs came out 69.3% smaller. Phone files will behave differently, and the method is on the benchmark page.

How do I prepare a whole listing in one batch?

Do it once per listing, not once per photo. Copy the shots to a folder and drag the folder in.

  1. Export photos from your phone

AirDrop or Image Capture into a new folder. Keep these as your originals.

  2. Drag the folder into Smol

Output lands beside the originals as copies with a _compressed suffix, by default.

  3. Set JPG, quality 80, maximum dimension 1600

Leave the fit mode on fit. Raise quality for detail-heavy items.

  4. Run it and read the sizes

Each file shows its before and after. Anything above a few MB is worth a second look.

  5. Upload the compressed copies

Lead with the best front-on shot, then add detail and flaw photos in order.

Why are my eBay photos blurry?

Photos look blurry on eBay when they are too small, out of focus or over-compressed. eBay’s own help says small photos turn blurry when enlarged.

  • Too small: anything near the 500 × 500 minimum will soften when a buyer zooms. Shoot big, then shrink to about 1600.
  • Upscaled: stretching a small image does not add detail. Smol can upscale 2×, 3× or 4×, but reshooting a sharp photo is better.
  • Over-compressed: very low quality can show blocky edges on text and labels, so keep quality at 75 or above for listings.
  • Soft source: no setting fixes missed focus. Use daylight and tap to focus on the label.

What do eBay sellers use today to resize photos?

Free options come first and often suffice for a handful of listings. Smol earns its place when you batch, or when HEIC and file size keep slowing you down.

When is Smol the wrong tool for eBay photos?

Smol is a Mac app for batches, and it does not fit every seller.

  • You list from a phone only. Smol runs on macOS only, so an iPhone-only workflow needs the Camera setting or eBay’s own uploader.
  • You list a handful of photos a month. Preview or the eBay uploader is free and enough.
  • You need a white background, cutouts or color correction. Smol does not edit images.
  • You need lossless output. Smol always re-encodes images, so ImageOptim is the answer for pixel-identical files.
  • You want photos under a fixed byte count. Smol sets quality and pixel size; check the output size yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eBay photo size?

eBay recommends photos of about 1600 × 1600 pixels, with a minimum of 500 × 500. Save as JPG, keep the longest side near 1600, and use a 1:1 or 16:9 shape, which eBay lists as its recommended aspect ratios. Larger is accepted up to the file limit, but not required.

What is the eBay image file size limit?

eBay’s photo uploader takes images up to 12 MB each, according to its Adding pictures help page. That is far above what a 1600-pixel JPG needs, so the limit mostly matters for full-resolution camera files and large TIFFs. Check the output size after compressing.

How many photos can I add on eBay?

Most categories allow up to 24 photos per listing at no cost. Multi-variation listings allow 12 photos per variation, and motor vehicle listings depend on the vehicle package. Front, back, flaws and labels matter more than hitting the maximum, so plan the shots before you compress them.

Why are my eBay photos blurry?

Usually because the photo is too small, out of focus or over-compressed. eBay notes that small photos blur when enlarged. Shoot large, shrink to about 1600 pixels rather than stretching a small image, and keep compression quality at 75 or above. Missed focus cannot be fixed by any setting.

Does eBay accept HEIC photos from an iPhone?

eBay’s help page lists HEIC among accepted formats, alongside JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP and AVIF. A JPG is still the easiest file to reuse on other marketplaces. In Smol, use Compress with output JPG rather than Convert, so your quality setting applies.

Does Smol work on Windows or an iPhone?

No. Smol is a macOS app, requiring macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon or macOS 14 or later on Intel. Files stay on your Mac, with no upload and no account. It costs $29 once for one Mac, with Team and Enterprise options on the pricing page.
