About

Smol for Mac: the Mac app that makes files smaller

Smol is a Mac app. It compresses and converts images, PDFs, video and audio on your own Mac, with nothing uploaded and no account. It lives at smolmac.com, which is why people also call it the Smol Mac app or smolmac. It costs $29 once for one Mac.

What does Smol do?

  • Compresses images to JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC or GIF, a whole folder at a time.
  • Compresses PDFs with five presets, from Tiny to Original.
  • Compresses video to MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, and audio to AAC, MP3, FLAC, Opus and more.
  • Converts between formats, strips metadata such as GPS location, and upscales images 2×, 3× or 4×.
  • Lets AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex run jobs through its MCP server, locally.

How it compares with other tools is measured in public on the benchmark page, including the comparisons Smol lost.

What does Smol need, and what does it cost?

macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon, or macOS 14 or later on Intel. Solo is $29 once for one Mac, Team is $49 once for three Macs, and Enterprise is $20 a seat for 5 to 500 seats. Updates are included and there is no subscription. There is no free trial and purchases are not refundable. See pricing.

Which other “smol” is not this one?

Several unrelated things share the word. Smol for Mac is none of these:

  • Smolr, a separate free, open-source Mac image compressor. How the two differ.
  • SmolLM, a family of small AI language models.
  • smolapp.com, a different company with a different website.
  • Other apps with “smol” in the name. If it is not downloaded from smolmac.com, it is not this app.

Who makes Smol?

Smol is made by a small independent team. The Mac app is signed with an Apple Developer ID issued to Likeflare LLC and is notarized by Apple. News and announcements are on the press page and on X at @SmolMacApp. For help, use the support page or write to [email protected].
