To compress iPhone video on Mac, drag the clip into Smol, set the codec to H.265 (or H.264 for the widest playback), keep the quality at High or drop it to Web, and lower the resolution if 4K is more than the viewer needs. Then check the size of the copy it writes next to the original.
| What you are sending | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| A short clip by email | Gmail and Outlook.com both stop at 25 MB | MP4, H.264, resolution 1280 or 854, quality Web; check the size |
| A clip for Windows or a browser | HEVC is fully supported by 16.94% of global browser usage (caniuse, 27 Sept 2026) | MP4 with H.264 |
| A 4K archive to free up space | About 175 MB a minute at 4K, 30 fps HEVC | MP4 or MOV, H.265, quality High, resolution original |
| A ProRes take | Several GB a minute | MP4, H.265, High; keep the ProRes master until you check the copy |
How big is an iPhone 4K video file?
Apple estimates that one minute of 4K at 30 fps HEVC “may use more than” 175 MB. That is about 23 megabits a second, so a 25 MB email cap is gone after roughly nine seconds of footage. ProRes is in another league, as the table shows.
| Format or service | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 4K, 30 fps, HEVC | More than 175 MB per minute | Apple, read 11 October 2026 |
| 4K, 30 fps, ProRes LT | More than 3.1 GB per minute | Apple, read 11 October 2026 |
| 4K, 30 fps, ProRes 422 | More than 4.4 GB per minute | Apple, read 11 October 2026 |
| 4K, 30 fps, ProRes 422 HQ | More than 6.6 GB per minute | Apple, read 11 October 2026 |
| Gmail, personal account | 25 MB; larger files become a Drive link | Google, read 11 October 2026 |
| Outlook.com | 25 MB attachment; 2 GB via OneDrive | Microsoft, read 11 October 2026 |
| Apple Mail Drop | Up to 5 GB; expires after 30 days | Apple, read 11 October 2026 |
Those are Apple’s estimates for its Final Cut Camera app, and Apple words them as “more than”. Other frame rates, 60 fps and busy scenes can push a clip higher. The reliable number is the size of your own file in Finder.
Which settings compress an iPhone video best?
Pick the codec for the audience, then the resolution, then the quality. H.265 gives the smaller file; H.264 plays almost everywhere. The quality numbers below are starting points we chose, not measured thresholds, so test one clip first.
| Goal | Container and codec | Quality | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive 4K but smaller | MP4 or MOV, H.265 | High (CRF 24, the default) | Original |
| Share a link or cloud folder | MP4, H.265 | Web (CRF 28) | 1920 |
| Send to a Windows user or old TV | MP4, H.264 | High (CRF 24) | 1920 |
| Email or message | MP4, H.264 | Web (CRF 28), or an exact CRF if you need to push harder | 1280 or 854 |
| Silent b-roll | MP4, H.265 | Web (CRF 28) | 1920, audio removed |
Smol’s resolution options are original, 3840, 1920, 1280 and 854. How much H.265 saves depends on the footage: in our H.265 versus H.264 test at CRF 28 it saved 3% on a calm clip and 29.9% on a busy one. Dropping resolution is often the bigger lever; the 4K compression guide found a 1080p version at 13% of the size scored as indistinguishable by VMAF (that test used CRF 28).
How do I convert HEVC to MP4 on a Mac?
Drop the iPhone .mov into Smol, choose Compress and set the output to MP4. Choose H.264 if the file must play on Windows or in a browser, or H.265 if you only want a smaller file and the viewers use Apple devices.
The distinction matters. Apple says Most Compatible records “JPEG or H.264” and High Efficiency records HEIF and HEVC, per its Camera formats page. HEVC is the smaller format, but in our compatibility check only 16.94% of global browser usage fully supported it (caniuse, 27 September 2026). A plain container swap is covered in MOV to MP4 on Mac; changing the codec means re-encoding, which is what Compress does. You can also set the phone to Most Compatible, at the cost of bigger new files.
How do I compress an iPhone video on my Mac, step by step?
Get the clip onto the Mac first, then work on a copy of the batch.
Move the clips to your Mac
AirDrop, Image Capture or Photos export all work. Keep this folder as your originals.
Drag the files or the whole folder into Smol
A batch is fine, and you can mix a video with photos or a PDF.
Choose container, codec and quality
Use the goals table above. Start at High; move to Web only if the copy is still too big.
Set the resolution
1920 for most sharing, 1280 or 854 for email. Leave original for the archive.
Run it and read the per-file sizes
The copy is written beside the original with a
_compressedsuffix by default. Play the first few seconds before you delete anything.Check it against your cap
Smol sets quality and resolution, not a byte count. If the copy is over, rerun at a lower resolution or Web quality.

Why is my iPhone video too large to email, and what are the options?
Because the cap applies to the whole message, not just the video. Gmail and Outlook.com stop at 25 MB, and email encoding adds overhead, so our email video guide aims at about 15 MB. At that budget, a clip of a minute or more usually needs a lower resolution as well as lower quality.
- Compress to H.264 MP4 at 1280 or 854 wide with Web quality, then check the size.
- Use Mail Drop from Apple Mail: up to 5 GB, and the link expires after 30 days.
- Let Gmail turn it into a Drive link, as Google describes, if the recipient can open links.
- For chat apps, see video size limits for WhatsApp.
What is the ProRes iPhone file size, and can I shrink it?
Apple says ProRes files are “up to 30 times larger than HEVC files”, and its estimates run from 3.1 GB to 6.6 GB a minute at 4K, 30 fps. That is roughly 18 to 38 times the 175 MB HEVC figure. A ProRes take is an editing master, so keep it until the edit is done.
Apple’s ProRes page also says you need at least 10 percent of storage free to record in it. On the Mac, compress a delivery copy to H.265 MP4 and judge it by eye, since the take is already an intermediate. For multi-camera work see video teams.
What do iPhone videographers use today to compress video?
Free tools come first. QuickTime Player’s export menu labels its options “Smaller File Size (HEVC)” and “Greater Compatibility (H.264)” per Apple, which is enough for one clip.
| Option | Good for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| QuickTime Player export | One clip, no install | Few controls; one file at a time |
| Phone set to Most Compatible | Avoiding HEVC from the start | New files are larger |
| Mail Drop | Sending a big file unchanged | Link expires in 30 days; recipient must download |
| HandBrake | Free, detailed control | More settings to learn; see HandBrake alternatives |
| Smol | Folders of mixed clips, presets, quick actions | Paid once; no size target for video; Mac only |
Smol’s edge is batches: a folder of clips, a saved preset on that Mac, a Finder Quick Action. The batch video guide shows the workflow.
When is Smol the wrong tool?
- You need an exact file size such as 15 MB. Smol has no size target for video, so use a two-pass encoder (see the email guide).
- You are editing. Compress the delivery copy, never the footage you will cut.
- You work on Windows, Linux or an iPhone only. Smol is macOS only.
- The clip is a single 20-second file that QuickTime can already export small enough.

Frequently asked questions
How do I compress iPhone video on a Mac?
Drag the clip into Smol, choose MP4, pick H.265 for the smallest file or H.264 for the widest playback, set quality to High or Web, lower the resolution if 4K is not needed, and run. It writes a copy beside the original, so check the size.
How big is an iPhone 4K video file?
Apple estimates that one minute of 4K at 30 fps HEVC may use more than 175 MB. Higher frame rates and busy scenes can push it above that, so check your own file in Finder. That works out to roughly 23 megabits per second of footage.
How do I convert HEVC to MP4 on a Mac?
Open the iPhone .mov in Smol, choose Compress and set the output to MP4. Choose H.264 if it must play on Windows or in a browser, or H.265 for a smaller file on Apple devices. Changing the codec re-encodes the video, so play the result before deleting the original.
Why is my iPhone video too large to email?
Gmail and Outlook.com both cap attachments at 25 MB, and a minute of 4K HEVC can be 175 MB. Compress to H.264 MP4 at 1280 or 854 wide with Web quality, then check the size, or send a Mail Drop link of up to 5 GB.
What is the ProRes iPhone file size?
Apple’s estimates for 4K at 30 fps are more than 3.1 GB a minute for ProRes LT, 4.4 GB for ProRes 422 and 6.6 GB for ProRes 422 HQ. Apple also says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files.
Does compressing an iPhone video lower the quality?
Yes, a little. Smol always re-encodes, so some detail is traded for size. At the default High setting (CRF 24) and the original resolution the loss is usually hard to see, but compare a few seconds of your own footage against the original before deleting anything.
