Compress Video for WhatsApp on a Mac, Without Mushy Quality

You filmed a clip, WhatsApp says it is too big, or it arrives smeared. Smol compresses video for WhatsApp on your Mac: H.264 MP4, a lower resolution and a quality setting you choose, so the file is smaller before WhatsApp touches it. Nothing is uploaded to compress it.
  • Make an H.264 MP4 that plays on both iPhone and Android
  • Lower resolution or quality until the file fits, then check the size
  • Remove the audio track from clips that need none
  • Drop in a whole folder of clips; originals stay untouched by default

To compress video for WhatsApp, export an H.264 MP4 at a lower resolution and a higher CRF value, then check the file size. For a clip you want to keep at full quality, send the original as a document instead: WhatsApp states a 2 GB maximum for documents. Here is which route fits which clip.

What is the WhatsApp video size limit?

Two numbers are published on official WhatsApp pages: 16 MB for video on the Business API and 2 GB for documents in the app. The limit a personal chat applies to a video sent from the gallery is not a figure we can quote.

What is the WhatsApp document size limit, and can I send video as a document?

The app’s document limit is 2 GB, and WhatsApp’s own page says large files go “without compression”. A video attached as a document is a file, not a clip, so it should arrive as you made it.

The catch is playback. The recipient taps a file and their phone has to open it, so the codec matters. The Business Platform docs list only H.264 video with AAC audio as supported, and warn that H.264 High profile with B-frames fails on Android clients. An MP4 in H.264 is the safest bet, though the docs do not say which H.264 profile Smol writes, so play a test file on an Android phone before you send something important. Our H.265 vs H.264 guide covers the difference, and converting MOV to MP4 handles iPhone files.

Sending as a document has costs. The recipient sees a file icon rather than an inline player, the 2 GB ceiling is far above what mobile data should be asked to carry, and a 4K clip at full quality can still take minutes on a weak connection. Compressing first is kind to both ends.

Why does WhatsApp reduce video quality?

The same WhatsApp page that gives the 2 GB document figure says large files go “without compression”, which points to videos sent as media being compressed. That is the likely reason a clip looks softer on arrival, though WhatsApp does not publish the details.

You cannot undo that step, and a video that was already heavily compressed loses more. Two ways to take control:

  • Compress it yourself first, with the resolution and quality you chose. WhatsApp then has less to remove, and you see the result before sending.
  • Send it as a document and skip the re-encode, after compressing to an H.264 MP4 so it opens everywhere.

Resolution is the first lever. A 4K frame holds four times the pixels of 1080p; a phone screen in a chat shows far fewer. Reducing the output size before you send removes data the viewer never sees. See reducing video file size on Mac for the trade-offs.

How do I compress video for WhatsApp with Smol?

MP4 container, H.264 codec, resolution reduced to 1080p or 720p, quality Web as a first try. Then check the size and adjust.

Smol settings by situation (quality numbers are starting points, not measured thresholds)
SituationFormat and codecQualityResolution
Clip for a chat or groupMP4, H.264Web (CRF 28)1080p, or 720p if still large
Keep detail, send as documentMP4, H.264High (CRF 24)Keep or reduce to 1080p
Business API, 16 MB capMP4, H.264, AACWeb, or a higher CRF if needed720p or lower for clips over a minute
iPhone H.265 .movMP4, H.264High or WebKeep, then reduce if over the limit
Silent screen recordingMP4, H.264WebAs recorded or 1080p; audio removed

The arithmetic for a hard cap: 16 MB is about 128 megabits, so a one-minute clip gets around 2,100 kbps for everything, or about 2,000 kbps for the picture after 96 kbps of audio. A two-minute clip gets half that. Busy footage (leaves, crowds, handheld) needs more bits for the same look than a static talking head. The method behind a size budget is in compressing a video to email size, and the same reasoning applies to Discord’s upload limit.

How do I send a large video on WhatsApp from a Mac?

Compress on the Mac, move the file to your phone, send. The same steps work for a WhatsApp Web or desktop chat, where you attach the file directly.

  1. Drag the video into Smol

Several clips can go in together, along with images or PDFs.

  2. Choose MP4 and H.264

Set quality to Web for a chat clip or High for a keepsake, and reduce resolution to 1080p or 720p.

  3. Switch audio off if there is none worth keeping

Screen recordings and b-roll lose bytes for nothing.

  4. Compress and read the output size

The copy lands beside the original with a _compressed suffix by default. If it is over your limit, run it again with a lower resolution or quality.

  5. Send it

On the phone or desktop app, attach it as a video for a quick share, or as a document to avoid re-compression.

iPhone footage is covered in iPhone video on Mac. A folder of clips works the same way; see batch compressing videos. Smol also has a Finder Quick Action if you do this daily.

What do people use today to shrink a video for WhatsApp?

Common ways to prepare a video for WhatsApp, and where each falls short
ToolWins atFalls short
WhatsApp itselfFree, one tap, no extra stepLikely compresses the video; you do not pick the quality
Send as documentSkips compression, up to 2 GBFile-icon experience; huge files on slow data
QuickTime Player exportBuilt in; 1080p and 720p presetsNo quality slider or codec choice; one file at a time
HandBrakeFree with fine controlA dense settings screen; see the HandBrake alternative page
SmolQuality, codec and resolution in one batch, localNot a size-target tool for video; not free

QuickTime is a fair first stop if you have one clip. When there are many, or you want H.264 at a chosen quality every time, a batch tool saves the clicking. Our HandBrake alternatives page compares the options, and four ways to compress a video tests them.

When Smol is the wrong tool

  • One clip, once. Sending it as a document, or letting WhatsApp compress it, costs nothing. For other chat and workspace caps, see Slack and Teams file limits.
  • You need a guaranteed size under 16 MB. Smol sets quality and resolution, not output bytes, so you will iterate.
  • You are not on a Mac. Smol runs on macOS only, on Apple Silicon (macOS 13+) or Intel (macOS 14+).
  • Compression runs on a server for your app. The Smol API exists for that; the desktop app is for your own Mac.

Price

Smol Solo is $29 once for one Mac. There is no free trial and purchases are not refundable, so decide after trying the free browser demo on the homepage (it is not the app). Team is $49 for three Macs; Enterprise is $20 a seat for 5 to 500 seats. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress video for WhatsApp on a Mac?

Drag the video into Smol, choose MP4 with the H.264 codec, set quality to Web as a starting point, and reduce the resolution to 1080p or 720p. Compress, read the output size, and run again with lower settings if it is still too large.

What is the WhatsApp video size limit?

On the WhatsApp Business API the stated video limit is 16 MB, in H.264 with AAC audio. For the personal app, the figure we can cite is 2 GB for documents. Check the prompt on your own phone for gallery videos.

What is the WhatsApp document size limit?

WhatsApp states a maximum of 2 GB for documents, and says large files are sent without compression. The Business API lists 100 MB for documents. Pick the number that matches how you are sending.

Why does WhatsApp reduce video quality?

WhatsApp does not publish how it treats videos sent as media, but its own page says documents go without compression, which points to compression of media. To keep more detail, compress the clip yourself first, or send it as a document.

How do I send a large video on WhatsApp?

Compress it to an H.264 MP4 with a lower resolution, then send it as a document if you want to avoid a second round of compression. Documents can be up to 2 GB, but a smaller file reaches the other person faster.

Will an iPhone video play for Android users?

An H.264 MP4 is the safest choice; the Business Platform docs list H.264 and AAC as the supported pair. An H.265 file may not play everywhere, so convert it to H.264 MP4 before sending.
