The Slack file size limit is 1 GB per file, and Teams chat accepts 100 MB. If an upload fails, the file is over the cap or you hit a count limit. Compress it on your Mac first. Here is each limit with its source, and the setting that gets a file under it.
| What you are sending | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Screen recording or phone video to Slack | 1 GB per file in Slack | Compress, MP4, H.264, quality Web (CRF 28), lower the resolution; then check the size |
| Video in a Teams chat | 100 MB per file in chat; 10 attachments | Compress, MP4, H.264, quality Web, resolution reduced; check the size, run again if over |
| PDF report or deck export | 100 MB in Teams chat; 1 GB in Slack | PDF preset Small; Medium if it is a scan |
| Screenshots and photos | Slack previews only images under 45 million pixels | Compress, JPG or WebP, quality 75, maximum dimension 2000 (the default) |
What is the Slack file size limit?
Slack lets you add files up to 1 GB each. Its help page also says you can drag and drop up to 10 files into the message field on desktop. It gives no separate limit for video, so a clip falls under the same 1 GB.
That cap is generous, so a failed Slack upload is often something else. The Slack Help Center page says files are checked for malware and are not uploaded if any is detected. It also lists preview limits: an image previews inline only if it is under 25,000 pixels on the longest side and under 45 million pixels total, and Office files over 50 MB show no preview. A file with no preview is still shared; people just have to download it. In Slack Connect conversations, some file types cannot be added at all, per the same page.
What is the Teams file size limit?
The Teams chat table on Microsoft’s limits page lists a file size limitation of 100 MB and 10 file attachments, with an error message if you exceed the count. Files you put in a team channel are stored in SharePoint, whose limits page lists a 250 GB file upload limit.
| Where | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Slack, one file | 1 GB | Slack Help Center |
| Slack, desktop drag and drop | Up to 10 files at once | Slack Help Center |
| Slack, inline image preview | Under 25,000 px on the long side and under 45 million pixels | Slack Help Center |
| Slack, Office file preview | No preview above 50 MB | Slack Help Center |
| Teams chat, one file | 100 MB | Microsoft Learn |
| Teams chat, attachments | 10 | Microsoft Learn |
| Teams files in SharePoint, one file | 250 GB | Microsoft Learn, SharePoint limits |
| Teams meeting recording | 4 hours or 1.5 GB, then it restarts | Microsoft Learn |
All figures read 11 October 2026. Microsoft dated the Teams page July 2026. If an upload fails below these numbers, see the failure causes further down.
What do I do when a video is too large for Slack or Teams?
Lower the resolution and raise the compression, in that order, then check the file size. A 1080p screen recording rarely needs more than 1080p, and a thread viewer rarely needs 4K. Smol has no “make this 100 MB” control for video, so you set quality and resolution, look at the result, and run again if it is still over.
| Goal | Output and codec | Quality | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slack, plenty of room under 1 GB | MP4, H.264 | High (CRF 24), the default label | Keep |
| Teams chat, under 100 MB | MP4, H.264 | Web (CRF 28), a starting point | Reduce to 1280 wide or lower for long clips |
| Tight on size, nobody will pause on a frame | MP4, H.264 | CRF 30 to 33, a guess to start at | Reduce |
| Voice not needed (silent demo) | MP4, H.264 | Web | Reduce; switch audio off |
H.265 is Smol’s default codec, but H.264 is the safer pick for chat because the person who opens it may be on any device. Our H.265 versus H.264 guide explains the trade. For the numbers behind the quality labels, see how to compress a video on a Mac, which picks CRF 26 to 28 for anything headed to Slack, and the screen recording guide if that is what you recorded. Sending the clip on a phone instead? See WhatsApp video size, or Zoom recordings for meeting captures.
Why does Slack say the upload failed under 1 GB?
A slack upload failed message under the cap usually points elsewhere: a flaky connection, a blocked file type in Slack Connect, or malware scanning. Shrinking the file helps with the first, since a smaller file survives a bad connection more often. It cannot fix a blocked file type.
How do I compress a video for Teams on a Mac?
Drop the file in Smol, pick MP4 and H.264, lower the resolution, run it, and read the size. The same steps work for Slack. The whole thing takes a minute or two for a short clip.
Drag the file or folder into Smol
Mixed batches are fine: a video, a PDF and a screenshot can go in together.
Choose Compress, then MP4 with H.264
Set the quality label to Web, or an exact CRF if you want to tune it. Reduce the resolution for long clips.
Run it and read the output size
Smol shows before and after for every file and writes a copy with a
_compressedsuffix. By default the original is untouched.Still over the cap? Lower resolution or raise CRF, and run again
Run from the original, not the copy, so you do not stack losses.
Attach the compressed copy
If Teams still refuses it, count the attachments; the chat limit is 10.

How do I shrink PDFs and screenshots before sending?
For a PDF, use the Small preset; use Medium for scanned pages. Presets are pixel caps on the long edge, 600, 900, 1200, 1800 and 2400 pixels for Tiny, Small, Medium, Large and Original, so the sharpness you get depends on the page size. Original is not lossless.
| File | Smol setting | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| PDF export from a design tool or scanner | Preset Small, or Medium for scans | Some generator-made PDFs barely shrink; check the size |
| Screenshots (PNG) | Compress, output WebP or JPG, quality 75 | Thin text can soften at low quality; check one |
| Phone photos (HEIC) | Compress with output JPG | Use Compress, not Convert; Convert ignores quality |
| Photos with GPS | Default metadata stripping | Open one output and confirm |
Our PDF too big to upload guide and the five PDF methods, tested have the measured results. For images, the benchmark page has the data: on 24 small 768 × 512 test photos, Smol’s AVIF needed 22 to 26% fewer bytes than the best JPEG at the same SSIMULACRA2 score. Those are small film photographs, so camera files will behave differently. Check what a tool can open on the other end before choosing AVIF for a chat; JPG or WebP is the safer pick.
What do people use today to get under a chat limit?
| Option | Wins at | Falls short |
|---|---|---|
| A link instead of an attachment | Free. Share from OneDrive, SharePoint or Drive and skip the cap entirely. | The recipient needs access, and the file lives in two places. |
| QuickTime Player export (built in) | Free and installed. Export at 720p or 1080p. | Few controls and no batches; you pick a resolution, not a quality. |
| HandBrake (free) | Deep control over video settings. | A large settings maze; see our HandBrake alternatives guide for the trade. |
| Online compressors | Nothing to install. | Upload limits of their own, and your file goes to a server. |
| Smol | Video, PDFs and images in one drop, offline, with a before and after for each file. | Not the fastest; no size target for video; paid ($29 once, no trial). |
More on the video side in the HandBrake alternatives comparison, and for the chat-adjacent limit see Discord’s upload limit.
When is Smol the wrong tool?
Smol will not solve everything on this page. Skip it in these cases.
- You are on Windows, Linux or a phone. Smol is a Mac app and runs only on macOS.
- The file is already under the cap and the upload still fails. That points to a connection, a blocked file type or malware scanning, not size.
- You need a file to hit an exact byte count. Smol sets quality and resolution; for video it has no size target, so you must check and rerun.
- The recipient can open a link. Sharing from SharePoint or OneDrive avoids the cap and keeps one copy.
- You need to redact, edit or sign a PDF. Smol does not do that.
If your work is the opposite, a team of Macs that sends large files all day, see the pricing page: Solo is $29 for one Mac, Team is $49 for three, and Enterprise is $20 a seat from 5 seats. Presets live on each Mac, so write your settings down and recreate them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Slack file size limit?
Slack’s help page says you can add files up to 1 GB in size, and that you can drag and drop up to 10 files into the message field on desktop. It states no separate limit for video. Read on 11 October 2026; check the page if your workspace seems stricter.
What is the Teams file size limit for chat?
Microsoft’s Teams limits page lists a file size limitation of 100 MB for chat, with at most 10 file attachments per message. Files shared in team channels are stored in SharePoint, where Microsoft lists a 250 GB per-file upload limit. Recordings are separate: 4 hours or 1.5 GB.
My video is too large for Slack. How do I fix it?
Compress it and lower the resolution. In Smol choose Compress, MP4, H.264, quality Web (CRF 28), and reduce the output size for long clips. Then read the output size. Smol cannot target a file size for video, so rerun at a lower resolution if it is still too big.
How do I compress a video for Teams?
Drop it in Smol, pick MP4 with H.264, set quality to Web and reduce the resolution, then check the result against the 100 MB chat limit. If it is over, run the original again at a lower resolution. Microsoft’s recording cap of 4 hours or 1.5 GB is separate.
Why did my Slack upload fail when the file is under 1 GB?
Slack scans files for malware and does not upload a file if any is found. In Slack Connect conversations some file types cannot be added at all. A weak connection can also interrupt an upload. Compressing helps with the connection; it cannot fix a blocked type.
Does Smol upload my files to compress them?
No. Smol compresses on your Mac, with no account and no server. Nothing is uploaded. That matters for client decks, contracts and recordings you would rather not hand to an online compressor before posting them in a channel. Smol then writes a smaller copy next to the original, so you can attach it or keep both.
