To compress drone footage on a Mac, re-encode the clip to H.265 (or H.264 for older viewers) at a quality you pick, and lower the resolution if the viewer does not need 4K. A drone clip at its top bitrate runs about 1.1 GB a minute, so the right setting depends on where the file is going.
| What you are doing | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Client review link (Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer) | Upload time and storage, not a hard cap; Drive takes files up to 5 TB | MP4, H.265, High quality, keep resolution |
| YouTube or Vimeo | YouTube recommends 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K; Vimeo suggests 30 to 60 Mbps | MP4, H.264 or H.265, exact CRF around 20, keep resolution |
| Email or chat attachment | Gmail stops at 25 MB; a minute of 4K cannot fit well | Reduce to 1080p or lower, Web quality, cut the clip short, then check the size |
| Archive or editing proxy | Card and drive space; 10-bit log footage needs care | H.265, High quality, keep a copy of the original |
Why is my drone video too large to upload? DJI 4K file size explained
DJI 4K file size is set by bitrate, and the drone records at a high one so the footage survives editing. The Mini 4 Pro publishes a maximum of 150 Mbps for both H.264 and H.265, per DJI’s spec page (read 11 October 2026). Divide by 8 for megabytes a second, multiply by 60 for a minute.
| Bitrate | MB per minute | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 150 Mbps | 1,125 | DJI Mini 4 Pro maximum, H.264 and H.265 |
| 100 Mbps | 750 | Arithmetic example for a lower setting |
| 35 to 45 Mbps | 262.5 to 337.5 | YouTube’s recommended 4K SDR, 24 to 30 fps |
| 8 Mbps | 60 | YouTube’s recommended 1080p SDR, 24 to 30 fps |
A 20-minute run of footage at 150 Mbps is about 22.5 GB. That is 3.3 to 4.3 times the bitrate YouTube recommends for 4K, which is why a clip that edits fine on your Mac can become a drone video too large to upload on a hotel connection. A delivery copy at the recommended bitrate is a fraction of the size.
What limits will I hit?
| Destination | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less; 15 minutes by default on unverified accounts | YouTube Help |
| YouTube (recommended encode) | MP4, H.264; 4K SDR 35 to 45 Mbps (24, 25, 30 fps), 53 to 68 Mbps (48, 50, 60 fps); 1080p 8 or 12 Mbps | YouTube Help |
| Vimeo | Recommends H.264, ProRes 422 (HQ) or H.265; 4K at 30 to 60 Mbps; CRF 18 or lower; no maximum file size stated | Vimeo Help |
| Gmail | 25 MB on personal accounts; above that Gmail adds a Google Drive link | Gmail Help |
| Google Drive | Individual files up to 5 TB | Drive Help |
The hard caps are rarely the problem. The time to upload 20 GB, and a client who must download it, is. Compressing first fixes both.
Is H.265 drone footage worth the compatibility trade-off?
Usually yes for storage and sharing links, no for anything a stranger must open on an old device. H.265 (HEVC) compresses better than H.264, but it plays on fewer players, and its saving depends on how busy the picture is.
Apple describes the split plainly: High Efficiency records HEVC, while Most Compatible records H.264 and is described as more broadly compatible with other devices and operating systems. DJI’s Mini 4 Pro writes either inside an MP4, and its 10-bit HLG and D-Log M modes are H.265 only, as is 4K at 100 fps.
On our two generated test clips at the same settings, H.265 saved 3% on a calm pan and 30% on a busy one at CRF 28, per H.265 vs H.264. Foliage, water and waves look like the busy clip to an encoder, so H.265 drone footage tends to repay the switch more than a sky shot does, though we did not test drone files. The 4K compression guide covers the trade in more detail.
Which Smol settings suit drone footage?
Start with H.265 at the High label, which is CRF 24, and adjust after you look at one clip. Smol offers H.265 (the default) or H.264, MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV output, quality labels (High is CRF 24, Web is CRF 28) or an exact CRF from 0 to 63, nine speed presets, a resolution you can keep or reduce, and an option to remove audio.
| Delivery | Output and codec | Quality | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client review link | MP4, H.265 | High (CRF 24) | Keep |
| Client who cannot play H.265 | MP4, H.264 | High (CRF 24) | Keep or reduce |
| Upload to YouTube or Vimeo | MP4, H.264 or H.265 | Exact CRF about 20; Vimeo asks for 18 or lower | Keep |
| Social post, quick share | MP4, H.264 | Web (CRF 28) | Reduce |
| Email or chat attachment | MP4, H.264 | Web (CRF 28) | Reduce, trim the clip |
| Archive copy | MP4 or MOV, H.265 | High (CRF 24) | Keep |
Smol sets quality and resolution, not output bytes, and video has no size target. After a run check the size of each result and rerun any file that misses at a higher CRF or lower resolution. A lower CRF number means higher quality and a bigger file.
For scale, twelve generated 1080p clips went from 135,034,271 to 14,005,491 bytes at H.265, CRF 28, an 89.6% reduction, measured on an M2 Pro on 27 September 2026 (see batch compressing videos). Those were five-second test clips, not drone files, so judge yours on a short sample first.
How do I compress drone footage with Smol, step by step?
Copy the card to your Mac first, then compress the copies. It takes five steps.
Copy the card to a folder on your Mac
Work from the copy. Smol writes a new file with a
_compressedsuffix and does not overwrite the original by default.Drag the clips or the whole folder into Smol
Mixed batches work, so stills and clips from the same flight can go in together.
Pick MP4 and a codec
H.265 for a client link or archive. H.264 for anyone whose player is unknown.
Set quality and resolution
Use High for review copies and Web for quick shares, or type an exact CRF. Reduce the resolution if 4K is not required.
Run it, then open the smallest and largest result
Play a few seconds of each. If a file is still too large for its destination, raise the CRF or lower the resolution and run it again.

How do I send drone video to a client?
Send a link, not an attachment. Gmail stops at 25 MB and converts larger attachments to a Drive link anyway, so upload a compressed MP4 to shared storage and email the link.
- Put a High-quality H.265 or H.264 review copy in Drive, Dropbox or a similar folder. Drive accepts single files up to 5 TB, so the cap will not stop you.
- Ask which player the client uses. If the answer is unknown, send H.264 MP4, the format Apple describes as more broadly compatible.
- Keep the full-resolution file for the final delivery and send the smaller one for approval.
- If it must be an attachment, plan for roughly 15 MB, because encoding adds overhead. That is about 1,904 kbps for one minute, per compressing video for email, so cut the clip short.
Real estate and property work often ships drone clips with photos and PDFs; see real estate listing photos for that packet.
What do drone pilots use to shrink footage today?
Here is how the common options compare, with free and built-in tools first.
| Tool | Cost | Strength | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickTime Player export | Built in | No install, one file at a time | Few settings; no batch |
| HandBrake | Free | Many controls, batch queue | A large settings menu; see the HandBrake alternatives guide |
| DaVinci Resolve | Free version | Full edit and grade, then export | Heavy for a plain size reduction |
| Apple Compressor | Paid | Deep export control | Built for editors |
| Smol | $29 once | Drop in a folder; H.265 or H.264, quality, resolution | Not fast; no video size target |
If you already edit in Resolve, export your delivery from there. For a card of raw clips that just needs shrinking, a lighter tool saves time. The video compression comparison tests four methods.
When Smol is the wrong tool for drone footage
You are still editing. Compress after the cut. Editing from a re-encoded file adds a generation of loss you do not need.
You must keep 10-bit log files exact. Smol makes no promise to preserve bit depth or a log profile, so archive D-Log M originals untouched.
You need GPS removed from video. Smol’s metadata operation covers images and PDFs, so it is not a video location scrubber.
You are not on a Mac. Smol runs on macOS only. Smol is also not the fastest encoder; a long card takes a while.
You compress once a month. QuickTime Player or HandBrake costs nothing and is enough.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress drone footage on a Mac?
Copy the clips to your Mac, drop them into Smol, choose MP4 with H.265 or H.264, pick High or Web quality or an exact CRF, and lower the resolution if you do not need 4K. Run it, then check the result sizes. The originals stay untouched by default.
How big is DJI 4K footage per minute?
At its top setting the DJI Mini 4 Pro records 150 Mbps, which works out to about 1,125 MB a minute. Lower bitrates are proportionally smaller: 100 Mbps is 750 MB a minute. Your own files depend on the mode and frame rate you chose, so check one clip in Finder.
Is H.265 drone footage safe to send to a client?
It plays on many players but not all of them. Apple describes H.264 as the more broadly compatible format. If you do not know the client’s player, send H.264 in an MP4. Use H.265 for archives and for clients you know can open it.
My drone video is too large to upload. What should I do?
Check the platform cap first. YouTube allows 256 GB or 12 hours, so the cap rarely blocks you; upload time does. YouTube recommends 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K. Compress to H.265 or H.264 at High or Web quality, lower the resolution if allowed, and upload the smaller file.
What is the best way to send drone video to a client?
Upload a compressed MP4 to shared storage and email the link. Gmail personal accounts stop at 25 MB and turn larger attachments into Drive links. Send a review copy first, then the full-resolution delivery when the client approves.
Can Smol make a drone video exactly 25 MB?
No. Smol sets codec, quality and resolution for video, not a byte target. Compress, check the result, and if it is over, raise the CRF, lower the resolution or trim the clip, then run it again. The target-size mode in Smol applies to images only.
