Wedding video file size is set by bitrate and running time, not by the wedding: every 1 Mbps of video is about 7.5 MB per minute. A four-minute highlight film at 10 to 20 Mbps lands near 300 to 600 MB, and a 90-minute full film near 6.75 to 13.5 GB. Below is each delivery route, its published limit and the Smol setting for it.
| What you are sending | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Highlight film, 3 to 5 minutes | Gmail stops at 25 MB; a free Dropbox Basic transfer at 2 GB | Send a link, not an attachment. Compress, MP4, H.264, High, 1920 wide |
| Full ceremony and reception film | 6.75 to 13.5 GB at 10 to 20 Mbps for 90 minutes; Dropbox Basic caps at 2 GB | Compress, MP4 or MOV, H.265, High, then check the size and playback |
| Teaser for socials or a chat app | Upload time on a slow connection; keep it short | Compress, MP4, H.264, Web, 1280 or 854 wide |
| 4K master you want to keep as 4K | 35 to 45 Mbps on YouTube; 30 to 60 Mbps on Vimeo | Keep the master as is; make a separate 1080p client copy |
How big is a wedding video file?
Size equals bitrate times duration, so a wedding film is big because it is long. The table multiplies the video bitrates platforms publish by a 4-minute highlight and a 90-minute film. Audio adds a little more, and your editor’s own export estimate beats this arithmetic.
| Video bitrate | Per minute | 4-minute highlight | 90-minute film |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps (YouTube 1080p, standard frame rate) | 60 MB | 240 MB | 5.4 GB |
| 12 Mbps (YouTube 1080p, 48 to 60 fps) | 90 MB | 360 MB | 8.1 GB |
| 20 Mbps (top of Vimeo’s 1080p range) | 150 MB | 600 MB | 13.5 GB |
| 35 Mbps (low end of YouTube 4K) | 262.5 MB | 1.05 GB | 23.6 GB |
| 45 Mbps (top of YouTube 4K) | 337.5 MB | 1.35 GB | 30.4 GB |
That is why a client who asks for “the whole film” in 4K is asking for 24 to 30 GB. A 1080p copy at 8 to 20 Mbps is 5.4 to 13.5 GB. In a 4-second test clip we measured, a 1080p version at 13% of the size scored the same as the 4K file when viewed on a 1080p screen (the numbers are here).
What limits do wedding video files run into?
The tightest limit is email: Gmail’s personal-account cap is 25 MB, and above it Gmail swaps the attachment for a Google Drive link. Cloud links are far looser, but free tiers and expiry dates still bite on a long film.
| Route | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail attachment | 25 MB; larger files become a Google Drive link | Gmail Help |
| Google Drive file | Up to 5 TB for most files | Drive Help |
| Dropbox Transfer | Basic 2 GB; Family and Plus 50 GB; Standard, Professional and Business 100 GB; expiry 7 days on Basic, Family and Plus | Dropbox Help |
| YouTube upload (SDR) | 1080p: 8 Mbps, or 12 Mbps at 48 to 60 fps. 4K: 35 to 45 Mbps, or 53 to 68 Mbps. MP4, H.264 | YouTube Help |
| Vimeo upload | 1080p: 10 to 20 Mbps. 4K: 30 to 60 Mbps. CRF 18 or below if your tool sets CRF. H.264, ProRes 422 (HQ) or H.265 | Vimeo Help |
Vimeo’s page states no upload file size limit. Email adds about 37% on top of the attachment, which is why a 24 MB file can still bounce (see compressing a video small enough to email).
What are the best wedding video export settings?
Export one high-quality master from your editor, then make smaller copies from it. Do not re-encode a copy of a copy. If the film is going to Vimeo or YouTube, upload at the platform’s bitrate from your editor; Smol is for the copies you hand to people.
| Deliverable | Format and codec | Quality | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client download copy (any TV, any laptop) | MP4, H.264 | High (CRF 24) | 1920 wide |
| Smaller client copy for modern devices | MP4, H.265 | High (CRF 24) | 1920 wide |
| Highlight film for a link | MP4, H.264 | High (CRF 24) | 1920 wide |
| Teaser for chat or socials | MP4, H.264 | Web (CRF 28) | 1280 or 854 wide |
| 4K client copy | MP4, H.265 | High (CRF 24) | Original |
Smol sets quality (a CRF value from 0 to 63) and resolution, not a byte count, so the output size depends on the footage: busy dance-floor scenes cost more than calm portraits. Smol’s own “High” is CRF 24; Vimeo suggests CRF 18 or below for what you upload to it, which you can type in as an exact CRF. If a 25 or 50 GB result matters, check the file after one run.
H.265 or H.264? At the same CRF, H.265 saved 3% on a calm clip and 30% on a busy one in our measurements, but it plays fully on fewer browsers. Pick H.264 when you do not know the couple’s television, and H.265 when the file size is the problem.
How do I deliver a wedding film online?
Keep your master, make a 1080p client copy, upload it to a cloud link, and email the link. Never attach the film. The steps below take about the same time for a highlight or a full film.
Export the master from your editor
Use Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or your editor of choice at the quality you would archive. This file never leaves your drives.
Drop the master into Smol
Drag the highlight, teaser and full film in together. Smol accepts mixed files in one batch and writes copies beside each original with a
_compressedsuffix by default, so the master is untouched.Set format, codec, quality and width
Choose MP4, H.264 or H.265, quality High, and 1920 wide for the client copy. Use Web and 1280 or 854 for a teaser. Smol can also remove the audio track if a file needs none.
Check the output before you send
Open the result, scrub the first dance and the vows, and read the size in Finder. Smol keeps the original if a compress would make a file larger, but it cannot promise a target size.
Upload and send a link
Put the copy in Google Drive, Dropbox or Vimeo and email the link. A Dropbox Basic transfer expires in 7 days, so tell the couple to save it.
How do I send a wedding video to clients?
Send a link to a hosted file, not an attachment. Free built-in tools handle some jobs, and an app earns its place when you repeat the job every wedding. Here is the fair comparison.
| Option | Cost | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your editor’s export dialog | Included with your editor | Full control of bitrate and codec | Each extra copy is another render queue |
| HandBrake | Free | Detailed control over encoder settings | Many settings to learn; see HandBrake alternatives |
| Smol | $29 once | Drag-and-drop batch, quality and width, H.265 or H.264 | Mac only; sets CRF, not a size target |
Batching is the real difference: on twelve 5-second 1080p test clips (about 18 Mbps H.264, grain added), Smol took 135,034,271 bytes to 14,005,659 at H.265 CRF 28, 89.6% fewer, measured 27 September 2026. Wedding footage is longer and varies, so your own savings will differ. The batch post has the method. If a couple also wants a quick preview on a phone, see WhatsApp video size.
What is a good highlight film size?
For a 4-minute highlight film at 1080p, 8 to 20 Mbps gives a highlight film size of 240 to 600 MB. Smol sets quality, not a byte count, so check the result after one run.
Highlights are the files clients forward, so favor compatibility over the last megabyte: H.264 MP4, 1920 wide, High. For the Instagram or TikTok cut, a smaller Web copy is fine because the platform recompresses it. Our video delivery guide and YouTube upload guide cover those routes, and compressing video on a Mac compares four methods.
When is Smol the wrong tool?
Smol is not the answer for every wedding deliverable. Skip it in these cases.
- Your master or archive. Compression is lossy; export masters from your editor and keep them.
- A hard size target. Smol has no “make this 500 MB” control for video, so use your editor’s bitrate field if a platform requires an exact size.
- Color grading, edits or captions. Smol compresses finished files; it does not edit.
- Windows or Linux editing machines. Smol runs on Mac only.
- Fastest possible encodes. Smol is not the fastest tool, so if turnaround matters more than file size, export the client copy straight from your editor.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a typical wedding video file size?
It depends on bitrate and length. At 10 to 20 Mbps, a 4-minute highlight is about 300 to 600 MB and a 90-minute film is about 6.75 to 13.5 GB. A 4K export at 35 to 45 Mbps reaches 23 to 30 GB for the same 90 minutes.
How do I send a wedding video to clients if it is too big for email?
Upload it to Google Drive, Dropbox or Vimeo and email the link. Gmail caps attachments at 25 MB and replaces larger ones with a Drive link anyway. Dropbox Basic transfers top out at 2 GB and expire in 7 days, so check your plan.
What are the best wedding video export settings for clients?
For a download copy, use MP4 with H.264 at 1080p for the widest playback. Vimeo recommends 10 to 20 Mbps for 1080p and CRF 18 or below for uploads. In Smol, start at High (CRF 24) and 1920 wide, then check the result.
Can I deliver a wedding film online without uploading it somewhere private?
Smol does the compressing locally, so the footage is not uploaded during that step. You still have to host the final file somewhere to share it. Pick a host and set an expiry that suits the couple, and keep your master offline.
Should a wedding highlight film be H.264 or H.265?
Use H.264 when you do not know what the couple will play it on. H.265 made files 3% to 30% smaller in our tests but plays fully on fewer browsers. For a 4-minute highlight, the size saved is small next to the playback risk.
Does Smol have a free trial or a way to hit an exact file size?
No on both. Smol is $29 once for one Mac, with no free trial. For video you choose format, codec, quality and width, not a byte target, so check the output size after a run and adjust the quality if it is still too large.
