To convert WAV to MP3 for demo submission, export the stereo mix and encode it as MP3 at 192 to 320 kbps: about 1.4 to 2.4 MB a minute against 10.6 MB for the WAV. Keep the WAV. Bandcamp wants the lossless file, and a demo inbox wants the small one.
| What you are sending | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Demo to a label or A&R inbox | Email attachment caps, 25 MB at Gmail | Compress audio, MP3, 192 to 320 kbps; check the size |
| Link or upload to SoundCloud | 4 GB and 24 hours per file in the API docs | WAV is fine; MP3 only if you want a small file |
| Release via a distributor | DistroKid agreement: 250 MB, WAV up to 24-bit / 96 kHz | Send the lossless master, even where MP3 is listed |
| Bandcamp upload | WAV, AIFF or FLAC; MP3 is not accepted | Do not convert. Upload the lossless file |
| Stems for a mixer or collaborator | Ten stereo 24-bit stems add up to hundreds of MB | FLAC or WAV zipped for a mix; MP3 only for a rough listen |
How do I convert WAV to MP3 for a demo submission?
Drag the WAV into Smol, choose Compress, set the output to MP3 and a bitrate, and run it. The MP3 lands beside the WAV with a _compressed suffix, and the WAV is not overwritten by default. Smol’s bitrate runs from 16 to 512 kbps.
The size follows from the bitrate. A 3.5-minute song is about 37 MB as a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV, about 8.4 MB at 320 kbps and about 5 MB at 192 kbps. Both pass a 25 MB inbox. That is arithmetic, so check the real file; a variable-bitrate encode will differ. Making a podcast instead? See Smol for podcasters, or voice-over auditions for spoken-word files. For how bitrate works, see audio bitrate explained, and for the Mac-side options see convert WAV to MP3 on Mac.
Which bitrate should a demo be?
Use 320 kbps if the size allows, or 192 kbps if it does not. Those are starting points, not measured thresholds. Listen to the result before you send it.
What are the DistroKid, SoundCloud and Bandcamp file limits?
Bandcamp takes WAV, AIFF and FLAC only. SoundCloud’s API docs list both lossless and MP3 formats, up to 4 GB. DistroKid’s published agreement allows formats including MP3, but the sheet is dated 2021. Check each service’s upload screen before you send.
| Service or channel | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| DistroKid audio requirements | Agreement dated June 8, 2021: WAV, MP3, AIFF, CDDA, m4a, WMA, FLAC up to 250 MB; WAV up to 24-bit / 96 kHz. The current help pages are the better guide | DistroKid agreement |
| SoundCloud upload limit | Up to 4 GB per file and 24 hours of audio per track; formats listed include AIFF, WAVE, FLAC, OGG, MP2, MP3, AAC, AMR, WMA | SoundCloud docs |
| Bandcamp file format | WAV, AIFF and FLAC accepted, MP3 not accepted; 16-bit and 24-bit supported, 32-bit not; no size limit stated | Formats, Bit depth |
| Gmail, personal account | 25 MB; larger attachments become a Drive link |
Bandcamp states its reason as starting from a high-quality source so it can make streaming and download versions, and it advises against converting an MP3 up to a lossless file.
Which Smol settings suit a demo, a stem share or a rough listen?
Compress to MP3 for demos and rough listens. For anything another person will mix or master, send lossless instead. Smol’s audio bitrate is 16 to 512 kbps and sample rate 8 to 192 kHz.
| Purpose | Operation and format | Bitrate | Approx. size per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demo to a label inbox | Compress, MP3 | 320 kbps | 2.4 MB |
| Demo, tight size cap | Compress, MP3 | 192 kbps | 1.4 MB |
| Rough mix for a collaborator | Compress, AAC or M4A | 192 kbps | 1.4 MB |
| Voice memo or idea sketch | Compress, MP3 | 96 to 128 kbps | 0.7 to 1 MB |
| Mix handoff | Keep WAV or FLAC | Lossless | 10.6 MB stereo, 16-bit/44.1 kHz |
Do not raise the sample rate or bit depth when you encode; a higher number does not add information that is not in the WAV. Leave the sample rate as the source unless an uploader asks for a specific one.
How do I send a demo, step by step?
Bounce the final stereo mix as WAV
Export 16-bit or 24-bit from your DAW and keep this file as the master.
Drag the WAV into Smol
Drop a folder to batch several versions or songs at once.
Choose Compress, MP3, 320 kbps
Drop to 192 kbps if the inbox cap is tight. Presets live on one Mac, so write your settings down for a second machine.
Check the output size
Smol sets the bitrate, not the byte count, so read the file size. If it is over, run it again at a lower bitrate.
Rename and send
Remove the
_compressedsuffix and use the artist and title, then attach or link it.
How big are stems, and how do I send them?
Stems are large because each is a full-length file: ten 4-minute stereo 24-bit, 48 kHz stems are about 69 MB each, roughly 690 MB. That is arithmetic. Mono stems are half of that.
- For a mixing engineer, send lossless WAV or FLAC through a link service. Email at 25 MB cannot carry it.
- For a collaborator who only needs to audition parts, an MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.4 MB a minute per stem.
- Do not send MP3 stems to a mastering engineer, and do not convert them back to WAV later; the lost detail does not return.
Smol accepts WAV and FLAC and can output FLAC, which suits when the target is smaller but still lossless. For mixed file types in one drop, see batch converting audio on Mac and FLAC to MP3.
What else can convert WAV to MP3 on a Mac?
Free and built-in options come first, and for a single file they may be enough.
| Option | Cost | Good for | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your DAW’s bounce or export | Included | MP3 straight from the project | One song at a time |
| Terminal tools | Free | Scripting | Needs command-line comfort |
| Online converters | Often free | One quick file | Your unreleased track is uploaded |
| Smol | $29 once, one Mac | Batches, folders, stems, chosen bitrate, offline | No mastering or editing; Mac only |
Smol’s advantage here is privacy and batching. An unreleased song never leaves your Mac, and a folder of versions converts in one pass. If you only encode one MP3 a month from your DAW, you do not need it.
When is Smol the wrong tool for audio?
Smol compresses and converts audio. It does not do the following.
- Mastering. It will not fix loudness, EQ or clipping, so deliver a finished mix.
- Distribution masters. Bandcamp rejects MP3 and distributors take better from lossless; send the WAV, not an MP3 you made.
- Recovering quality. An MP3 converted back to WAV is still an MP3.
- Sample-accurate editing or loop point work. Use your DAW.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert WAV to MP3 for a demo submission?
Drag the WAV into Smol, choose Compress, set the output to MP3 at 192 to 320 kbps, and run it. A copy with a _compressed suffix appears beside the original. Check the file size against the inbox cap, and keep the WAV as your master.
What bitrate should a demo MP3 be?
320 kbps is a safe start when the size allows, at roughly 2.4 MB a minute. Use 192 kbps, about 1.4 MB a minute, if the cap is tight. These are starting points rather than measured thresholds, so listen to the result before sending.
What are DistroKid audio requirements?
DistroKid’s distribution agreement, dated June 8, 2021, lists WAV, MP3, AIFF, CDDA, m4a, WMA and FLAC up to 250 MB, with WAV up to 24-bit and 96 kHz. That sheet is dated, so check the current uploader, and send a lossless master where you can.
What is the SoundCloud upload limit?
SoundCloud’s developer docs state up to 4 GB per file and 24 hours of audio per track. WAV, FLAC and MP3 all appear on its format list, so a lossless file is fine to upload. Also check your account’s upload screen, in case it shows a limit of its own.
Which Bandcamp file format should I upload?
Upload WAV, AIFF or FLAC. Bandcamp’s help center says MP3 is not accepted and that it supports 16-bit and 24-bit files, not 32-bit. Bandcamp makes the streaming and download versions from your lossless file, so do not convert to MP3 first.
How do I send stems when the file size is too big?
Ten 4-minute stereo 24-bit, 48 kHz stems are roughly 690 MB, far above Gmail’s 25 MB cap, so use a link. Send WAV or FLAC for mixing. Compress to MP3 only for a rough listen, because a mix engineer needs the lossless detail.
