Smol for Macs running out of space

Reduce Video File Size to Free Up Space on Your Mac

Your Mac says storage is full and most of it is video: screen recordings, iPhone clips, old exports. Smol shrinks them on your Mac with a quality setting, writes a copy beside each original, and shows the saving per file. Nothing is uploaded, and you delete the originals only after you have watched the copies.
  • Shrink a whole folder of old videos in one drop
  • A one-minute screen recording went from 56 MB to 3.7 MB
  • Copies by default: originals stay until you remove them
  • Smaller files also mean less to sync to a full iCloud

To reduce video file size and free up space on a Mac, find the largest videos, compress them to H.265 at a lower quality or resolution, check the copies play correctly, then delete the originals. A one-minute screen recording we measured fell from 56.4 MB to 3.7 MB at Smol’s default. Here is what to compress first and which setting to use.

Why is my Mac storage full of videos?

Video files are far larger than documents or photos, and they pile up quietly. Our 60-second screen recording at 3024 × 1964 was 56,384,195 bytes with no audio, so a one-hour session is about 3.4 GB.

To see where the space went, open System Settings, General, Storage. Apple says it “shows how much storage space is used by various categories of files”, with a More Info button per category (Apple Support). For a full list of videos, press Command-F in Finder, set Kind to Movie, and sort by Size.

How do I reduce video file size to free up space on a Mac?

Re-encode each video with a more efficient codec and a lower quality or resolution than the original. Three levers change the size: the codec (H.265 or H.264), the quality (CRF), and the pixel size. Here is what each did to the same files in our video size guide.

Measured savings, Smol 1.0.34 on an Apple M2 Pro, 26 September 2026

10 s 1080p H.264 clipDefault (H.265, High)30,704,510 B6,111,954 B

Screen recordings shrink most because they are mostly still pixels. A camera clip has noise in every frame, so expect a smaller saving and test one file before the folder. The tested comparison shows how QuickTime’s Export As and HandBrake handled the same 1080p clip.

How do I shrink screen recordings on a Mac?

Drop the recordings into Smol, choose MP4 with H.265, and pick the High or Web quality label. QuickTime lets you set where a screen recording is saved (Apple Support), so aim Smol at that folder.

  • A Retina capture is large because it records at the screen’s native pixel size; setting the video resolution to 1920 gave 1662 × 1080 on our 3024 × 1964 clip.
  • If the recording has no spoken audio, remove the audio track to save a little more.
  • Trim dead time first in QuickTime; every second you cut is bytes you never encode.
  • Leave the full-size original until you have confirmed the text on screen still reads.

Support teams and trainers who record daily can read the sibling guides on screen recordings for support and Zoom recordings, and the screen recording post has the full method.

Which Smol settings should I use to compress old videos on a Mac?

Start with H.265 at the High label for anything you may watch again, and Web for clips you keep only as a record. These are starting points we chose, not tested thresholds for your footage.

Smol video settings by purpose (starting points)
PurposeFormat and codecQualityResolution
Screen recording archiveMP4, H.265High (CRF 24) or Web (CRF 28)1920 if text stays legible
Old iPhone clipsMP4, H.265Web (CRF 28)Keep original, or 1920
Edited exports to keepMP4, H.265High (CRF 24)Keep original
Clips for older TVs or playersMP4, H.264HighKeep original

Presets save these choices on one Mac, so make one called “Archive” and reuse it. The codec trade-offs are in H.265 vs H.264. If you shoot on a phone, the iPhone video on Mac page covers that workflow, and heavy 4K files are covered in compressing 4K video.

How do I compress a folder of old videos and clear the originals safely?

Compress copies first, verify, then delete. Smol writes each result beside the original with a _compressed suffix by default and never overwrites, so nothing is lost until you decide.

  1. List the biggest videos

Use Storage settings or a Finder search for Movie, sorted by Size. Start with the top twenty.

  2. Drag them into Smol

Folders and mixed batches work. Choose MP4, H.265 and a quality label from the settings table.

  3. Run one file first

Open the copy and scrub through it. Check the sound and any small text before you run the rest.

  4. Read the per-file savings

Smol shows the size before and after for every file. If a copy is not smaller, it keeps the original.

  5. Delete originals only after checking

Move the originals to the Trash, then empty it. Space is freed when the Trash is emptied.

What should I do when iCloud storage is full?

Free iCloud is 5 GB, and paid iCloud+ plans are 50 GB, 200 GB and 2, 6 or 12 TB (Apple Support). You can pay for more, or send less. Compressing videos before they sync is the second route.

  • Apple notes that Photos can “store full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud” (Apple Support), so large library videos count against your plan.
  • Files in Desktop and Documents also count once you turn on iCloud Drive for them.
  • Smol’s copies sit beside the originals, so iCloud holds both until you delete the originals.
  • For videos in the Photos library, export the video, compress it, check it, and only then remove the original in Photos.

Apple lists a 50 GB plan from $0.99 (USD) a month (Apple Support). Over years, that is a recurring cost; Smol is $29 once.

What else can I use to free up space, and how does it compare?

Free options come first, and several are enough for one or two files.

When is Smol the wrong tool?

It does not fit every storage problem.

  • You need frame-exact edits or color grading: use a video editor, not a compressor.
  • The disk is full of System Data, apps or caches rather than video: Smol cannot shrink those.
  • You need the original quality for archive or film delivery: any re-encode loses some detail.
  • You are on Windows, Linux or iOS: Smol is macOS only.
  • You need a result under an exact byte cap for video: Smol sets quality and size, not output bytes, so check the file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce video file size to free up space on a Mac?

Find your largest videos in System Settings, General, Storage or a Finder search for Movie sorted by Size. Compress them to H.265 at a lower quality or resolution, check the copies play, then delete the originals. In Smol, a 60-second screen recording went from 56,384,195 bytes to 3,691,160 at default settings.

Why is my Mac storage full of videos?

Video files are large, and screen recordings are heavy. Our 60-second Retina capture was 56 MB, about 3.4 GB an hour. Open System Settings, General, Storage and use More Info for each category to see what dominates, then compress or delete the biggest video files first.

Can I compress old videos on a Mac without losing them?

Yes, if you keep the originals until you have checked the copies. Smol writes a compressed copy beside each file by default and does not overwrite. Compression is lossy, so for irreplaceable footage keep a backup until you have watched the copy through.

How do I shrink a screen recording on a Mac?

Drop it into Smol, choose MP4 and H.265, and pick High or Web quality. Setting resolution to 1920 turned our 3024 by 1964 recording into 1662 by 1080 and 1,399,221 bytes from 56,384,195. Trim unneeded time first and remove audio if you do not need it.

What do I do when iCloud storage is full?

Apple gives 5 GB free and sells 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB and 12 TB plans. You can upgrade, or shrink files first. Compress videos, then delete the originals once the copies are checked, because copies and originals both count while they sit in iCloud.

Will compressing a video make it smaller if it is already compressed?

Often, yes, because Smol re-encodes the video with H.265 at the quality you choose. If a copy would be larger, Smol keeps the original. Savings vary by footage, so test one file first and read the before and after sizes.
