An interior design presentation PDF too large to send is almost always an image problem: each page can embed renderings, photos and product shots at far more pixels than a screen needs. Choose a PDF preset in Smol, check the size, and keep the original for print. The table below matches each file to its limit.
| What you are sending | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Client presentation or mood board PDF by email | Gmail: 25 MB on a personal account; email encoding adds about 37% | PDF preset Small, then check the size |
| Same deck, final print or reference copy | None, but a very large file is slow to open and share | PDF preset Medium or Large |
| Project photos for Houzz | Houzz Pro: 1000 px minimum, 2560 px ideal; UK editorial: 2400 px wide | Compress, output JPG, quality 75 to 80, maximum dimension 2560 |
| Project photos for your website | Squarespace: 500 KB recommended, 20 MB limit, 2500 px wide ideal | Compress, output WebP or JPG, quality 70 to 75, maximum dimension 2500 |
| Site and install photos going public | Phone photos can carry GPS coordinates | Images are stripped by default; verify one output |
Why is my interior design presentation PDF too large?
Each page carries pictures, and the picture count adds up. A deck with a rendering, a photo grid and several product images per page embeds each one at the size it was placed. Text and vector shapes weigh almost nothing by comparison.
The same thing happens in every layout tool. Keynote, InDesign, Canva and Illustrator all embed the pictures you drop in, and exporting at the highest quality setting keeps their pixels. Our guide to why an InDesign PDF export is 50 MB walks through the export-setting side. If you already have the finished PDF, compressing it is faster than re-exporting every deck.
A mood board PDF is the worst case, because it is a wall of images by design. A board with 30 full-size photos can easily become a file you cannot attach.
What client presentation file size will actually send?
For a personal Gmail account, the attachment cap is 25 MB, and above it Gmail replaces the attachment with a Google Drive link. Because email encoding adds about 37%, a file near 18 MB is the practical ceiling, and a client on a work account may have a lower limit.
| Where it goes | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail, personal account | 25 MB; over it, Gmail adds a Drive link | Google Mail Help |
| Houzz Pro profile photos | 1000 px minimum (wide or tall); ideal at least 2560 × 2560 px; no file size stated | Houzz Pro Learn |
| Houzz UK editorial submissions | Images at least 2,400 px wide; no file size stated | Houzz |
| Squarespace image upload | 500 KB or less recommended; 20 MB limit; 2500 px width ideal; 120 MP; .jpg, .gif, .png, .webp | Squarespace Help |
| Largest Contentful Paint (page speed) | 2.5 seconds or less, measured at the 75th percentile of loads | web.dev |
The Houzz pages above state no file size, so check the upload screen. Our guide to getting a PDF under Gmail’s 25 MB limit has the arithmetic. If the PDF is still too big, send it as a link from a file-sharing service rather than shrinking it past the point where the renderings look soft.
What mood board PDF size can you reach before it looks bad?
Smol’s PDF presets cap the long edge in pixels at 600, 900, 1200, 1800 and 2400 for Tiny, Small, Medium, Large and Original, with JPEG quality of roughly 25, 45, 60, 75 and 88. For a screen-viewed mood board, Small or Medium usually reads well, and you judge by opening the result.
Test on a copy first. Compress once at Small, zoom in on the finish swatches and fabric textures, and step up to Medium if they smear. Fine pattern and wood grain show degradation before a photograph of a room does. Results vary by file: PDFs from some generators barely shrink, while decks exported from design tools compress well. For a deeper explanation, read how to reduce PDF file size on Mac without wrecking the text.
Which Smol settings fit each interior design file?
Pick the deliverable, then the setting. These quality numbers are starting points we chose, not guarantees; open the result and check the size against the cap.
| Deliverable | Operation and format | Quality or preset | Maximum dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client deck by email | Compress PDF | Small | Not applicable |
| Deck for screen review | Compress PDF | Medium | Not applicable |
| Houzz project photos | Compress, output JPG | Quality 75 to 80 | 2560 |
| Website portfolio photos | Compress, output WebP or JPG | Quality 70 to 75 | 2500 |
| Photos for a mood board or deck | Compress, output JPG | Quality 75 | 1600 to 2000 |
| HEIC site photos | Compress, output JPG (not Convert) | Quality 75 | As above |
Our own tests, on 24 small 768 × 512 photographs, showed JPEGs 69.3% smaller at default settings, and PNG compressed to AVIF at quality 65 92.1% smaller. Those images are far smaller than a camera file, so your savings will differ. Smol does not generate several widths in one run; make a separate run for each size.
How do I prepare project photos for my website and Houzz?
Resize to the platform’s pixel target, then set quality. For Houzz, aim for 2560 px on the long edge; for a Squarespace site, 2500 px wide is ideal and 500 KB or less is recommended. Page speed matters because Google counts a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less as good.
- Photographer files arrive large. Our guide to image compression for photographers covers raising the resize limit so nothing is lost.
- For web use, WebP or AVIF often gives smaller files than JPG. See compressing images for web.
- Site visit photos carry GPS. Read how to strip GPS before sharing.
Houzz Pro states no file-size cap, so judge by whether the upload succeeds. A 2560 px JPG at quality 75 to 80 is a sensible start. Keep full-size originals for print and for the photographer’s license terms; Smol writes copies and by default never overwrites the source.
How do I shrink a presentation PDF and photos on a Mac?
Drag the files into Smol, choose the preset or format, and run. The whole job stays on your Mac, which matters when a deck holds a client’s floor plan or home address.
Keep the originals
Smol writes a copy with a
_compressedsuffix beside each file and never overwrites by default.Drag the PDF and photos in together
Mixed batches are fine: a deck, a folder of project photos and a short walkthrough clip can go in at once.
Choose Small for the PDF, JPG or WebP for photos
Set the quality and maximum dimension from the settings table.
Compress and check the sizes
Smol sets quality and pixels, not output bytes, so read the result against your cap, then open the PDF and zoom on a texture.

What do interior designers use today, and how does it compare?
Free and built-in options come first. Preview and your layout app are fine for occasional use; Smol earns its place when you do this weekly. Preview’s filter can enlarge some PDFs, as we show in why Reduce File Size ruins PDFs.
| Option | Cost | Strength | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-export from InDesign, Keynote or Canva at lower quality | Included | Controls images at the source | Redo every deck; settings differ per app |
| Preview, Quartz filter (Reduce File Size) | Built in | No install | Blunt; can enlarge text PDFs |
| Online PDF compressors | Free tiers | No install | Uploads client files; size caps |
| Adobe Acrobat | Subscription | Fine control | Heavy for one task; see our Acrobat alternatives |
| Smol | $29 once | Presets, batch, mixed files, local | No lossless mode; not the fastest |

When is Smol the wrong tool for interior design files?
Smol is not right for every file. Pick something else in these cases.
- You need print-ready, lossless output. Smol always re-encodes images and has no lossless mode; send the layout file or the untouched PDF to the printer.
- You work with SVG drawings or logos. Smol does not read or write SVG.
- You need to redact, sign, merge or edit a PDF, or run OCR. Smol does none of these.
- You are on Windows. Smol runs on macOS only.
- You have a single deck once a year. Preview or a re-export is free and enough.
A studio of several people can buy the Team license ($49 for three Macs) or Enterprise at $20 a seat for 5 to 500 seats. Presets live on one Mac, so write the settings down and recreate them on each.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my interior design presentation PDF too large to email?
Almost always because of embedded images. Renderings, site photos and product shots are kept at the pixel size they were placed, so a long deck grows quickly. Gmail stops at 25 MB on a personal account, and email encoding adds about 37%, so compress the images with a PDF preset and check the result.
What is the right Houzz photo size for project photos?
Houzz Pro Learn says high-quality photos have a minimum size of 1000 px, wide or tall, and calls at least 2560 × 2560 px the ideal. Houzz UK asks for editorial images at least 2,400 px wide. We found no file size stated on those pages, so confirm on your upload screen.
What is a good client presentation file size?
Aim for under about 18 MB if the deck goes by Gmail, because the 25 MB cap applies after encoding adds roughly 37%. For a link or a shared drive, size matters less, but a smaller file is still quicker for clients to open. Smol sets quality and pixels, not bytes, so check the compressed PDF yourself.
How big should a mood board PDF be?
There is no standard. For screen review, a Smol Small or Medium preset caps images at 900 or 1200 px on the long edge and is usually enough. Zoom into fabrics and finishes on a copy first, and step up a preset if the textures look smeared.
What size should project photos for a website be?
Squarespace says 2500 px wide is ideal for most images, recommends 500 KB or less, and sets a 20 MB limit. Resize to that width in Smol, compress to WebP or JPG at quality 70 to 75, and check the file size. Google counts an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less as good.
Does Smol upload my client files?
No. Smol compresses on your Mac, with no account and no server, so floor plans and addresses stay on your machine. By default it writes a copy and leaves the original untouched, and image compression strips GPS and camera metadata unless you turn that off.
