To reduce the PDF file size of architectural drawings, shrink the raster images inside them and leave the vector linework alone. Smol does the first part with five presets. A sheet that is only lines and text barely shrinks, so fix the export settings in your CAD or BIM tool first.
| What you are sending | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Plan set that will not email | Gmail 25 MB per message; about 37% added by email encoding; iCloud Mail 20 MB | PDF preset Medium or Large, then check the size; use Mail Drop or a link if it is still over |
| Portfolio of renders and photos | The host sets its own upload limit; read its current help page | PDF preset Medium for screen viewing |
| Scanned or plotted-to-image sheets | Large because each page is one big image | PDF preset Large, then zoom in on a detail |
| Pure vector sheets from CAD or BIM | Little to gain after export | Fix export settings first; Smol will save close to nothing |
Why are architectural drawing PDFs so large?
Usually because of images placed at high resolution, not because of linework. Revit’s own export help says that when high-DPI raster images are used on a sheet, “the size of the exported PDF will be large,” and it calls 300 DPI or lower the best practice. Autodesk Revit help, read 11 October 2026.
In practice the heavy items are rendered views, shaded elevations, site photos, scanned survey sheets and image fills. A vector plan of walls, dimensions and text is small by comparison. In our own control test, an eight-page PDF with only text and vector content went from 7,095 to 7,077 bytes at every preset, a 0.3% saving. If your set is mostly lines, the preset explainer shows why there is nothing for a compressor to remove.
So Smol shrinks images inside PDFs, and vector linework barely shrinks. Look at what is in your file before you pick a tool. Studios that also handle structural sheets will find the same rule in our engineers’ PDF guide.
What size limits do drawing sets and portfolios run into?
The limits that matter are email, a client portal and a portfolio host. The first two are published as numbers; the third varies by plan and changes, so read the host’s current page.
| Where it goes | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail, personal account | 25 MB; over it, Gmail adds a Google Drive link instead | Gmail help |
| Apple Mail Drop | Attachments up to 5 GB; each expires after 30 days | Apple Support |
| Revit PDF export, raster images | Best practice: 300 DPI or lower on sheets | Autodesk |
| Archicad Publisher PDF | “Limit image resolution to” caps embedded images; “Compress all images” converts them to JPG at 80% | Graphisoft |
Email counts more than the file. Google’s help says encoding adds about 37%, as our email limits guide explains, so aim well under the cap. That is why a plan set too large to email at 24 MB can still bounce at a 25 MB limit.
Which Smol settings compress PDF drawings?
Smol’s PDF presets cap the long edge of each embedded image at 600, 900, 1200, 1800 or 2400 pixels for Tiny, Small, Medium, Large and Original. They are pixel caps, not DPI targets, and Original is not lossless.
| Deliverable | Preset | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Review set by email | Medium | Smaller images, readable on screen; zoom into a detail on one sheet |
| Scanned or image-only sheets | Large | Keeps thin lines readable; starts at 1800 px |
| Portfolio PDF for screen | Medium | Photos and renders look fine on screen |
| Portfolio PDF for a host with a tight cap | Small, then check | Smaller output; check the result against the host’s current limit |
| Print or plot | Original, or skip it | Original still resamples above 2400 px; keep your export for plotting |
Also see the InDesign guide if your portfolio comes from InDesign, since the cause is the same: images placed at camera resolution.
How do I compress a plan set PDF on a Mac?
Check what is in the file, compress a copy, then inspect one sheet at full zoom. It takes a few minutes, and the original stays untouched by default.
Export once from your CAD or BIM tool
In Archicad, set a resolution limit under PDF Options. In Revit, keep raster images at 300 DPI or lower. Fixing it at the source saves more than any compressor on vector sheets.
Drag the PDFs into Smol
Drop the whole sheet set or the portfolio folder. Smol writes a copy with a
_compressedsuffix.Choose a preset
Medium for review sets and screens, Large for scans. See the table above.
Compare the sizes
Smol shows the size before and after for each file. If a sheet barely changed, it is probably vector.
Zoom into a detail
Open one sheet, zoom into a title block, a dimension string and a hatch. If thin lines went soft, go up a preset.
Send it, then link if it is still over
If the file is still over your limit, use Mail Drop or a shared link instead of cutting quality further.

How do I keep an architecture portfolio PDF size under a host’s limit?
Compress the images, then check the result against the host’s current number. Issuu publishes its own upload limit and can change it, so read Issuu’s upload help before you export.
- Export the portfolio from InDesign or your layout tool at screen resolution if it is for the web.
- Run it through Smol at Medium and look at the output size.
- If it is still over, try Small on a copy and zoom in on a render to judge it.
- Splitting a long portfolio into two files can beat crushing every image.
Smol sets quality and pixel size, not output bytes for PDFs, so it cannot promise a file lands under a cap. Read the size when it finishes. For the general method, see our guide to PDFs that are too big to upload.
What do architects use today to compress PDF drawings?
Free and built-in options first: your export settings, then Preview, then paid tools. Each one has a use.
| Option | Cost | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Export settings in Archicad or Revit | Included | Fixing the cause; resolution limits and raster DPI | Re-export per project |
| Preview, Reduce File Size | Free | A quick one-off | It made our 21-page text-only contract PDF 111.8% larger |
| Smol | $29 once | Batches of sheets and portfolio PDFs; images inside PDFs | Vector sheets barely shrink; no lossless mode |
| A full PDF suite | Varies | Editing, redaction, signing | See the Acrobat alternatives comparison |
Our Preview write-up has the test, and the Acrobat comparison covers the paid suites.
When is Smol the wrong tool for architectural drawings?
- Sheets that are all vector linework. There is nothing to shrink. Fix the export, or split the set.
- Plotting or print-ready sets. Pixel caps resample images, and Original is not lossless. Keep your full-resolution export for plotters.
- Anything needing redaction, OCR or edits. Smol does not redact, OCR, sign, merge or split PDFs.
- Not on a Mac. Smol is macOS only.
A note for studios
Solo is $29 once for one Mac, Team is $49 for three Macs, and Enterprise is $20 a seat for 5 to 500 seats. Presets live on each Mac, so write your settings down and recreate them on each machine. Interior teams sending renders have a similar workflow on the interior designers page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce the PDF file size of architectural drawings?
Find what makes the file large, usually high-resolution images such as renders, photos and scans. Lower the image resolution in your CAD or BIM export, then compress a copy in Smol with the Medium or Large preset and compare sizes. Pure vector sheets barely shrink, so splitting the set can help more than compression.
Can I compress PDF drawings without losing line quality?
Vector lines are not resampled, so they stay sharp. Raster images are, because every Smol PDF preset caps their pixel size and re-encodes them, and Original is not lossless. Compress a copy, zoom into a title block and a thin hatch, and go up a preset if lines look soft.
What is the Issuu upload limit for an architecture portfolio?
Issuu publishes its own upload limit and can change it, so check Issuu’s current upload help before exporting. Compress the images first, using Medium for screen viewing, and read the output size. Smol sets quality and pixel size, not bytes, so it cannot promise a file lands under a cap.
My plan set is too large to email. What can I do?
Gmail’s limit is 25 MB on personal accounts, and email encoding adds about 37%, so aim well under it. Compress the images in Smol and check the size. If it is still over, Apple Mail Drop sends attachments up to 5 GB and keeps them for 30 days.
What PDF preset is best for an architecture portfolio PDF?
Start with Medium for screen viewing: it caps images at 1200 pixels on the long edge. Use Large when thin linework or small text in raster pages must stay readable, and Small only when a host forces it. These are starting points, so open the result and zoom in.
Does Smol upload my drawings anywhere?
No. Smol runs on your Mac, with no account and no upload, which suits client drawings you cannot share with an online compressor. Originals are untouched by default, because Smol writes a copy with a _compressed suffix next to the original.
