Airbnb photo size requirements, as its help center states them, come down to one number: photos should be at least 1024 × 683 pixels. Airbnb’s help pages state no file-size cap. Vrbo’s minimum is the same, and Booking.com’s published limits differ. The table below pairs each case with the Smol setting.
| What you are uploading | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or camera photos to Airbnb | At least 1024 × 683 pixels; 5 photos to get started; searches show a square crop | Compress, output JPG, quality 75 to 80, maximum dimension 2000 or more |
| The same photos to Vrbo | At least 1024 × 683, ideally 3840 × 2160 or higher; 6 unique photos | Same export; raise the maximum dimension to 3840 for the best source |
| Photos to Booking.com through a channel manager | API limits: 300 × 300 to 14000 × 14000 pixels, 50 MB, JPEG or PNG | Compress, output JPG; check the largest file |
| iPhone HEIC files that will not upload | Booking.com’s API takes JPEG and PNG only | Compress with output JPG (not Convert) |
| Photos with GPS inside | Phone photos carry location unless it is off or removed | Metadata stripping is on by default; check one output |
What are the Airbnb photo size requirements?
Airbnb’s photo tour help page says “make sure your photos are at least 1024 x 683 pixels”, and every room needs at least one photo to appear in the tour. Neither that page nor Airbnb’s photo guide states a file-size cap or a format list.
That guide adds three things worth acting on. You need at least 5 photos to start, horizontal shots are the advice, and Airbnb automatically crops photos into squares for search results and your listing.
The practical reading: Airbnb sets a floor, not a ceiling. A 4032 × 3024 iPhone frame is about 12 million pixels, far past the 1024 × 683 minimum (about 0.7 million), so the question is usually how large a file your connection and the upload form tolerate.
What is a good Airbnb photo resolution?
Anything from 2000 pixels on the long edge upward comfortably clears Airbnb’s 1024 × 683 floor. Because Airbnb crops to squares in search, the subject should sit in the middle of the frame; a wide shot of a bed against a wall can lose its edges.
Our recommendation, which is ours and not Airbnb’s: export once at 2000 to 3840 pixels on the long edge, as JPG at quality 75 to 80. If you also list on Vrbo, which prefers 3840 × 2160 or higher, export at 3840 and use the same files everywhere. Smol’s own default is to fit images inside 2000 × 2000 pixels, so raise it when you want the Vrbo-size source.
What are the Vrbo photo requirements?
Vrbo’s photo guidelines ask for photos “at least 1024 x 683 pixels, but ideally… 3840 x 2160 pixels or higher”, in JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG format, with at least 6 unique photos per listing. The page states no maximum file size.
JPEG is on both Vrbo’s and Booking.com’s accepted lists, so it is the safe choice for one set of files.
What is the Booking.com photo size limit?
Booking.com’s photo API documentation lists minimum dimensions of 300 × 300, maximum of 14000 × 14000, a 50 MB file limit, JPEG and PNG only, and 299 photos per property.
Those are the limits for software that connects to Booking.com, such as a channel manager. If you upload by hand in the Extranet, check the requirements shown there.
| Platform | Pixels | File size | Formats and count | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airbnb | At least 1024 × 683 | Not stated | At least 5 photos to start; cropped to squares in search | Airbnb |
| Vrbo | At least 1024 × 683; ideally 3840 × 2160 or higher | Not stated | JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG; at least 6 unique photos | Vrbo |
| Booking.com (photo API) | 300 × 300 to 14000 × 14000 | 50 MB | JPEG and PNG; 299 photos per property | Booking.com |
Platforms change these pages, so check them before a big upload.
Which Smol settings make listing photos small enough to upload?
Set the output to JPG, quality 75 to 80, and a maximum dimension that matches the platform. Smol sets quality and pixel size, not output bytes, so check the largest file in the output folder.
| Destination | Operation and format | Quality | Maximum dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airbnb | Compress, JPG | 75 (the default) to 80 | 2000, enough for the 1024 × 683 floor |
| Vrbo, best source | Compress, JPG | 80 | 3840 |
| Booking.com via API or channel manager | Compress, JPG | 75 to 80 | 2000 to 3840; JPEG and PNG only |
| iPhone HEIC photos | Compress, JPG | Same as above | Same as above |
| Photos still too large for a form | Compress, JPG | Try 65, then check | Lower the maximum dimension to 1600 |
Smol also has a target-file-size mode (Neural), where you type a size from 4 to 4096 KB. It aims for a band, not a hard ceiling, and it is slow: about 28 seconds for one 768 × 512 image. Use it for the odd photo that will not fit.
For scale, on 24 small Kodak test photos (768 × 512, high-quality JPEGs, default settings), Smol’s JPEGs came out 69.3% smaller. Camera-size files will behave differently. Method and raw data are on the benchmark page.
How do I prepare a whole property shoot for upload?
Do it once per property, then reuse the same files on every platform.
Copy the shoot to a folder on your Mac
Originals stay untouched by default. Smol writes a copy with a
_compressedsuffix.Drag the folder into Smol
Mixed batches work, so the floor plan PDF can ride along.
Choose JPG, quality 75 to 80, and a maximum dimension
Use 2000 for Airbnb, 3840 if Vrbo is your main channel. Leave the fit mode on fit so nothing is cropped.
Compress, then sort the output by size
If any file is still too big for a form, rerun just those at a lower quality.
Open one output file and check it
Look at a bright window shot and a dark bedroom for banding, and confirm the file opens in your upload form.
If you keep shooting at the same property, the watched-folder guide explains the automatic route. It is for folders of fresh, unoptimized files only, because a watched folder can make already-optimized files larger.
Why are my listing photos too large to upload, or rejected?
Usually it is the file, not you: an unresized camera frame, or an iPhone HEIC the form does not read. Booking.com’s API accepts JPEG and PNG only, and Vrbo’s guidelines list JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and SVG, not HEIC.
- HEIC: use Compress with output JPG, not Convert. Converting to JPG ignores the quality setting and writes a large file. Background in why iPhone photos are HEIC and batch converting HEIC to JPG.
- Size: lower the maximum dimension before lowering quality; fewer pixels cuts bytes without softening detail as fast.
- Location: Smol strips GPS by default; verify one output with the GPS check.
What do hosts use today to resize listing photos?
Free tools come first, and for one or two photos they are enough.
| Tool | Good for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Preview (Tools, Adjust Size) | A few photos, no install | Manual steps per batch; no quality targets |
| Photos app export | Exporting from your library as JPEG | Works from your Photos library only |
| sips in Terminal | Fast scripted resizes | Command line only; see the sips guide |
| An online compressor | Quick one-offs | Files leave your Mac; caps per file |
| Smol | A whole shoot in one drop, HEIC to JPG, GPS stripped | Mac only; $29 once; no lossless mode |
The sips guide and every method compared go deeper. Hosts with a photographer should also see photographer delivery and agents can read the real estate listing page.
When is Smol the wrong tool?
- You are on Windows, Linux or a phone only. Smol is a Mac app.
- You need pixel-identical output. Smol always re-encodes images, so for a lossless pass use ImageOptim (see the head-to-head).
- You have three photos. Preview resizes them in a minute and costs nothing.
- You need editing: exposure, straightening, cropping to a subject. Smol does not edit photos.
- You want a guaranteed byte cap on every file. Smol sets quality and pixels, so you check the result.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Airbnb photo size requirements?
Airbnb’s photo tour help page says photos should be at least 1024 x 683 pixels, and its photo guide says you need at least 5 photos to get started. Neither page states a maximum file size or a format list, so check the result in the upload form after resizing.
What resolution should Airbnb photos be?
The floor is 1024 x 683 pixels. A long edge of 2000 pixels or more clears it comfortably. Airbnb crops photos into squares in search results, so keep the subject in the center. If you also list on Vrbo, exporting at 3840 pixels covers its preferred size.
What are the Vrbo photo requirements?
Vrbo’s guidelines ask for photos at least 1024 x 683 pixels and ideally 3840 x 2160 or higher, in JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG, with at least 6 unique photos per listing. The page states no maximum file size, so check the result in the upload form after resizing.
What is the Booking.com photo size limit?
Booking.com’s photo API documentation lists 300 x 300 minimum and 14000 x 14000 maximum pixels, a 50 MB limit, JPEG and PNG only, and 299 photos per property. Those are API limits for channel managers. For manual uploads, check the requirements in your Extranet.
Why are my listing photos too large to upload?
Camera frames are often 12 million pixels or more, and iPhone HEIC files may not be accepted. Lower the maximum dimension to 2000, compress to JPG at quality 75 to 80, then check the largest output file. Smol sets quality and pixel size, not bytes, so confirm the result.
Does Smol remove GPS from my vacation rental photos?
Metadata stripping is on by default for image compression and removes EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP, including copyright fields. You can switch it off if you want to keep a copyright field. Open one output file and check its metadata to confirm before you publish the listing.
