The Wix image size to aim for is at least 2560 × 1440 pixels, under Wix’s 50 MB image upload limit, and ideally under 25 MB, because Wix itself tells you to compress larger files first. Wix then converts what you upload to AVIF. Below is every limit with its source, and the Smol setting that meets it.
| What you are uploading | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| Camera or phone photos | 50 MB per image; Wix says compress anything over 25 MB | Compress, output JPG, quality 80 to 85, maximum dimension 2560 or higher |
| Screenshots and graphics | Wix recommends 2560 × 1440 minimum for quality | Compress, keep the original format, resize off |
| Animated GIFs | 15 MB per GIF; Wix recommends video instead | Convert the GIF to MP4, then compress the video |
| Video for Wix Video | 15 GB per file; 480 × 470 to 1920 × 1080 | MP4, H.264, resolution 1920 × 1080 or lower, then check the size |
| A video for a single player | 1 GB for the Single Video Player | MP4, quality “Web”, resolution reduced, then check the size |
What is the Wix image upload limit?
Wix lets you upload images up to 50 MB each and GIFs up to 15 MB. Its own performance guide separately says to compress any file larger than 25 MB before uploading. Every figure below comes from a Wix help page opened on 11 October 2026.
| Item | Limit or recommendation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Image upload | 50 MB per image | Wix Media file types |
| GIF upload | 15 MB | Wix Media file types |
| SVG upload | 250 KB; SVGs with embedded PNG or JPEG cannot be uploaded | Wix Media file types |
| Background images | At least 3000 × 3000 px | Wix Media file types |
| General site images | Minimum 2560 × 1440 px; compress files over 25 MB first | Site performance guide |
| Pro Gallery | Upload at least 2560 × 1440; quality not above 90 | Pro Gallery quality |
| Blog post images | Under 1000 × 1000 px | Wix Blog sizes |
| Blog cover (side by side, editorial) | 940 × 705 px, 4:3 | Wix Blog sizes |
| Social share image (og:image) | 1200 × 630 px, under 8 MB; WhatsApp previews only under 300 KB | Wix og:image |
When an upload fails for size, Wix shows “This file is too big. Upload a smaller file” with the cap filled in; Wix’s upload troubleshooting page does not list a number there. Check one compressed file before you upload a hundred of them.
What is the best Wix image size and format?
Upload at least 2560 × 1440 pixels for full-width images, and use the feature-specific sizes for blog covers and social previews. Wix then optimizes files to the dimensions they display at, per its Pro Gallery article, so a very large original adds upload weight without adding sharpness.
Smol’s image defaults resize to fit inside 2000 × 2000 pixels, which is below Wix’s 2560 recommendation, so change that setting before you run a batch for Wix. Agencies building many sites can read the web agency workflow, and Squarespace owners the Squarespace image size guide.
Special cases
- Background images: Wix asks for at least 3000 × 3000 px, so keep the long edge at 3000 or above.
- Blog covers: 940 × 705 for the side-by-side and editorial layouts, 940 × 940 for magazine.
- Social share: 1200 × 630, and under 300 KB if WhatsApp previews matter to you.
What is the best image format for Wix?
Upload JPG for photos and PNG for graphics that need sharp edges or transparency. Wix converts uploads to AVIF on the live site, which its own guide calls approximately 50% smaller than WebP, so you do not need to upload AVIF yourself.
Wix accepts many inputs, including HEIC, TIFF, WEBP, AVIF and RAW, but a JPG from Smol is the predictable choice. For logos and decorative shapes Wix recommends vector art, and its SVG cap is 250 KB. For anything animated it recommends video, not GIFs. Our GIF to MP4 guide covers that swap, and the HEIC to JPG guide covers iPhone photos.
On a Mac, use Compress with output JPG, not Convert, because quality settings belong to Compress. For the format trade-offs measured on the same test images, see the image compressor benchmark. The compress images for web page gives the short version. Wix says its optimization cannot be turned off.
Why are my Wix images blurry?
Blur on Wix usually comes from a source smaller than 2560 × 1440, a screenshot, an image scaled down by the browser, or gallery quality set too low. Wix notes that browsers apply their own downscaling, which can smooth colors or blur an image compared with the original file.
- Start from the original, not a screenshot or a file already compressed twice.
- Upload at least 2560 × 1440, as the Pro Gallery article advises.
- In a Pro Gallery, do not push image quality above 90; Wix says it can hurt site performance.
- Do not over-compress first. Compressing a photo hard in Smol and then letting Wix re-encode it to AVIF can add to the loss. Use quality 80 to 85 as a starting point, not 40.
That last point is the main trade-off of this page: Wix re-encodes whatever you upload, so the file you send should be moderately compressed, not squeezed. The quality numbers here are starting points we chose, not Wix rules; judge one output at full size before you run the folder.
What is the Wix video size limit?
Wix Video accepts up to 15 GB per file at 480 × 470 to 1920 × 1080 pixels, while the Single Video Player takes your own video up to 1 GB. Wix’s performance guide also tells you to compress videos before uploading.
| Where the video goes | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wix Video library | 15 GB per file | Adding videos |
| Wix Video resolution | 480 × 470 to 1920 × 1080 pixels | Wix Video files |
| Single Video Player | 1 GB | Adding videos |
| Embedded YouTube or Vimeo | Delivered via iFrames; Wix cannot optimize them | Site performance guide |
Wix’s 1920 × 1080 ceiling matters for 4K phone clips. In Smol, compress to MP4 and reduce the resolution to 1080p; the 4K compression guide and reduce video file size post show the method. Smol sets quality and resolution, not output bytes, so check the finished size against your cap. Wix advises against video backgrounds because they can slow the first page load.
Which Smol settings should I use for Wix?
For photos use Compress, output JPG, quality 80 to 85, and a maximum dimension of 2560 or more. The numbers are starting points we chose, not Wix rules, so open one result at full size before running a batch. The benchmark figure below used tiny test images; your camera files will differ.
| File | Smol operation | Setting (starting point) |
|---|---|---|
| Photo from a camera or iPhone | Compress | Output JPG, quality 80 to 85, max dimension 2560 or higher, fit mode |
| Screenshot or graphic | Compress | Original format, no resize, quality 85 |
| Photo over 25 MB | Compress | Quality 80, max dimension 3000; read the output size |
| Animated GIF | Convert to MP4 | Then compress the MP4, resolution at or below 1080p |
| Video | Compress | MP4, H.264, “Web” label, resolution 1080p or lower |
| Photo with location data | Default behavior | Metadata stripping is on by default and removes EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP |
In the benchmark, Smol made 24 high-quality JPEG test photos 69.3% smaller at quality 75 (24 small 768 × 512 film photographs, JPEG to JPEG). See the benchmark for the method.
How do I compress images for Wix on a Mac?
Compress the whole folder once, then upload the copies to the Wix Media Manager.
Gather the images
Keep the originals where they are. By default Smol writes a copy with a
_compressedsuffix and never overwrites.Drag the folder into Smol
Mixed batches work: photos, a PDF and a clip can go in together.
Set JPG, quality 80 to 85, and a max dimension of 2560 or higher
Raise the 2000 px default. Keep fit mode so nothing is cropped.
Run it and read the sizes
Smol shows each output. Find the largest. If it is under 25 MB, it meets Wix’s own advice.
Upload to the Media Manager
Check the picture at full size on your live page after publishing, on desktop and phone.
What do Wix owners use to resize images today?
Free options work for a few files. Preview and Photos export at a size and quality you choose, and online compressors cover small jobs. A Mac app earns its place on folders.
| Option | Good for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Preview (built in) | One photo at a time: Tools, Adjust Size, export JPEG quality | Manual, one file per pass |
| Wix’s own optimization | Automatic AVIF delivery on the live site | Cannot be disabled; does not shrink the upload you wait on |
| Free online compressors | A handful of images | Files are uploaded to someone else’s server |
| The sips command | Fast shell resizing, see the sips guide | No quality UI; terminal only |
| Smol | Folders, video, PDFs and mixed batches on your Mac | Not the fastest; no lossless mode |
The sips command guide and the methods comparison cover the free routes in detail.
When is Smol the wrong tool for Wix?
Smol is a Mac app for local files, so it does not fit every Wix job.
- You are on Windows or a Chromebook: Smol is macOS only.
- You need responsive sets: one run makes one size, so several widths of one photo need separate runs and renaming.
- You need pixel-identical output: Smol has no lossless mode; ImageOptim is the answer there.
- You only upload a few images a year: Preview does the job.
- Your files are already small web images: Smol keeps the original if compressing would enlarge it, so there is little to gain.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Wix image upload limit?
Wix’s file-types page lists 50 MB for images, 15 MB for GIFs and 250 KB for SVGs. Its site performance guide separately says to compress files larger than 25 MB with external tools before uploading. If an upload fails, Wix’s error message fills in the limit.
What is the best Wix image size for a full-width image?
Wix recommends at least 2560 × 1440 pixels for site images and Pro Gallery uploads, and at least 3000 × 3000 for background images. Blog posts should stay under 1000 × 1000, and the social share image should be 1200 × 630. Keep the photo near these sizes and under 25 MB.
What is the Wix video size limit?
Wix Video accepts up to 15 GB per file at 480 × 470 to 1920 × 1080 pixels. The Single Video Player takes your own video up to 1 GB. Wix also advises compressing videos before upload. Smol can reduce resolution and set quality; check the output size, since it does not target bytes for video.
Why are my Wix images blurry?
Common causes are a source smaller than 2560 × 1440, a screenshot, a browser downscaling a large image, or Pro Gallery quality set low. Wix advises not pushing gallery quality above 90. Also avoid compressing hard before upload, since Wix re-encodes the file to AVIF on the live site.
What is the best image format for Wix?
Upload JPG for photos and PNG for graphics needing transparency or sharp edges. Wix converts uploads to AVIF on the live site, so you do not need to upload AVIF. For logos Wix recommends vector art, and for animation it recommends video instead of GIFs.
Does Wix compress my images automatically?
Yes. Wix says it automatically optimizes images and converts them to AVIF for the live site, and that you cannot disable this. It does not shrink the file you upload, so compressing a 30 MB photo first still saves upload time and keeps you under the 25 MB advice.
