The Pinterest pin size to aim for is 2:3, which is 1000 × 1500 pixels, kept under the 20 MB web upload cap. Video Pins run 4 seconds to 5 minutes. Here is each limit with its source, and the Smol setting that meets it.
| What you are posting | The limit you hit | The Smol setting |
|---|---|---|
| A photo or graphic | 2:3 recommended; 20 MB on web; BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WEBP | Compress, output JPG, quality 75, fit to 1500 px |
| An iPhone photo (HEIC) | HEIC is not on Pinterest’s image file type list | Compress with output JPG, not Convert |
| A video Pin | 4 seconds to 5 minutes; MP4 or M4V on web; H.264 or H.265 | MP4, H.264, resolution reduced, then check the size |
| A batch of Pins | Up to 10 images or 10 videos per web upload | Drop the whole folder in; upload in tens |
What is the best Pinterest pin size?
Use a 2:3 ratio. Pinterest recommends 2:3 for images and for videos of 15 to 60 seconds, and says to create vertically because most of its audience is on mobile. The ad specs page turns that into 1000 × 1500 pixels.
| Item | What Pinterest publishes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended shape | 2:3 for images and for videos of 15 to 60 seconds; vertical overall | Pin performance |
| Image Pin file types | BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WEBP | Pin specs |
| Image file size | 20 MB on web; 1 GB recommended on the Android and iOS apps | Pin specs |
| Video file types | .MP4 and .M4V on web; .MP4, .MOV and .M4V on Android and iOS; H.264 or H.265 | Pin specs |
| Video length | Minimum 4 seconds, maximum 5 minutes | Pin specs |
| Full-screen video | 9:16, or 1080 × 1920; also 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 | Pin specs |
| Files per upload | On the web, up to 10 images or up to 10 videos, each its own Pin | Create a Pin |
All of it was read 11 October 2026. Pinterest also lists safe zones for text and key elements: 270 px at the top, 65 at the left, 195 at the right and 790 at the bottom. Keep titles and faces out of those margins. If your board is image-heavy, the same resizing logic applies to Instagram posts and product images for online stores.
What is the Pinterest image file size limit?
Twenty megabytes per image on the web, per Pinterest’s Pin specs page. The same page recommends 1 GB on the Android and iOS apps. The separate ad specs page, which covers paid Pins only, lists 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in-app for a .PNG or .JPEG (ad specs).
A JPEG rarely reaches 20 MB, but TIFF or PNG exports from a design tool and full-resolution camera files can. A smaller file also uploads faster over a phone connection, and a 4032 × 3024 photo has far more pixels than a 1000 × 1500 Pin. The Pin specs page gives no image resolution recommendation, so the ratio and the quality of the source are what you control.
For scale, on 24 small (768 × 512) high-quality JPEG photos, Smol at default settings made the files 69.3% smaller (benchmark, Smol 1.0.35, 9 October 2026). Camera-size files and graphics will land elsewhere, so check your own output.
What are the video Pin specs?
Video Pins take H.264 or H.265 in .MP4 or .M4V on the web, from 4 seconds to 5 minutes. The Pin specs page states no video file size limit, so check an export before relying on any number.
The ad specs page, which covers paid video only, states up to 2 GB and 4 seconds to 15 minutes (read 11 October 2026). Those are not the organic limits, so do not plan an organic upload around 15 minutes.
Phone video is the usual problem. A vertical 4K clip is far larger than a Pin needs, and 1080 × 1920 is the full-screen size Pinterest names. Reducing resolution and exporting H.264 MP4 gives you the broadest playback; the trade-offs between H.264 and H.265 are in H.265 vs H.264, and the full workflow is in how to compress a video on Mac. For short vertical clips that also go to Reels and Shorts, see the short-form video page.
What is the Idea Pin size now?
Pinterest’s Pin specs page lists no separate Idea Pin size and does not mention Idea Pins. Plan for the standard limits above: images at 2:3 and videos at 9:16 or 2:3, from 4 seconds to 5 minutes.
For video, the Pin specs page names 9:16 for full-bleed, plus 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1. Pick 9:16 for full-screen video and 2:3 for everything else, and confirm in the editor you see, since options change.
How do I keep Pinterest image quality high?
Start from a high-resolution source and shrink once. Pinterest’s guidance is “high-resolution assets,” and it warns that “blurry or distorted images and videos will make it difficult for people to see your idea.” Recompressing an already compressed JPEG is how images turn muddy.
| Pin type | Operation and output | Setting | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo Pin | Compress, JPG | Quality 75 (default), resize fit 1500 | A 2:3 frame becomes 1000 × 1500 |
| Graphic with flat color or text | Compress, PNG or JPG | Try quality 85 on JPG; compare to the PNG | Hard edges show artifacts first |
| HEIC from an iPhone | Compress, output JPG | Quality 75 to 80, not Convert | Convert ignores quality |
| Video Pin | Compress video, MP4, H.264 | Quality “High”, resolution reduced | Broad playback; check output size |
| Pins with location in the photo | Metadata strip | On by default for images | Removes EXIF and GPS |
One limit to know: fit scales the whole image into the box, so a landscape photo becomes a wide image, not a 2:3 Pin. Fill covers the box and crops it with no control over what is cut. Crop to 2:3 in your design tool first, then run Smol. Metadata is stripped by default, which includes GPS; our GPS guide shows what a phone photo carries.
How do I prepare a batch of Pins on a Mac?
Crop to 2:3 in your design tool, then run the folder through Smol once. By default originals stay untouched; Smol writes copies with a _compressed suffix by default.
Export Pin designs at the highest quality your tool offers
Shrinking happens once, in Smol, not twice.
Drag the folder into Smol
Images and short clips can go in the same batch.
Set images to Compress, JPG, quality 75, fit to 1500
Use PNG for graphics where JPG shows ringing around text, and compare the two.
Set video to MP4, H.264, resolution reduced
Aim for 1080 × 1920 on vertical clips. Smol sets quality, not a byte target, so check the result.
Run it and read the per-file sizes
Find the largest output. If a file is still too big for you, lower the quality a notch and rerun.
Upload in groups of ten
On the web, Pinterest lets you select up to 10 images or 10 videos at a time.

What do Pinterest creators use today, and how does it compare?
Free options exist. Compare them on the steps that matter for Pins.
| Tool | Cost | Good for | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your design tool’s export (Canva, Photoshop, Figma) | Already paid for | Cropping to 2:3 and exporting once | One file at a time unless you batch |
| Preview export | Built in | A quick resize or format change | No batch settings across mixed files |
| sips in Terminal | Built in | Scripted batch resizes | Command line only |
| ImageOptim | Free | Lossless by default, optional lossy | Image formats only on its page; no video |
| Smol | $29 once | Images, HEIC, video and metadata in one drag | Mac only; not the fastest on tiny files |
If one design tool already exports everything you post, you may not need anything else. Smol earns its place when the folder is mixed (HEIC photos, graphics, a vertical clip) and you want one pass. The wider comparison is in every method compared.
When is Smol the wrong tool for Pinterest?
Smol does not design Pins. Skip it in these cases.
- You need to crop to 2:3, add text or build a collage. Use a design tool; Smol’s fill mode crops without letting you choose what is cut.
- You need pixel-identical files. Smol always re-encodes images, so use a lossless optimizer such as ImageOptim at its default settings.
- You work on Windows, an iPad or a phone. Smol is macOS only.
- You schedule Pins through an online tool that already resizes on upload, and your sources are small. Compressing adds a step.
- You want SVG or JPEG XL output. Smol writes neither.

Solo is $29 for one Mac, Team is $49 for three Macs, and Enterprise is $20 per seat for 5 to 500 seats. Presets live on each Mac, so write the settings down and recreate them on each one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Pinterest pin size?
Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio for images and for videos of 15 to 60 seconds, created vertically because most of its audience is on mobile. Its ad specs page gives 1000 by 1500 pixels as the 2:3 size. Full-screen video is 9:16, or 1080 by 1920. Pinterest also lists 1:2, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 for video, but its guidance leads with 2:3.
What is the Pinterest image file size limit?
On the web, Pinterest’s Pin specs page caps an image Pin at 20 MB and recommends 1 GB on the Android and iOS apps. The paid ad specs list 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in-app. Accepted image types are BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WEBP. Check the output size of any file you compress.
What are the video Pin specs?
Pinterest’s Pin specs say .MP4 and .M4V on the web, with .MOV also on Android and iOS, encoded in H.264 or H.265, from 4 seconds to 5 minutes. Full-screen is 9:16 or 1080 by 1920. The page states no video file size limit. Ads allow up to 2 GB and 15 minutes, which are different rules.
What is the Idea Pin size now?
Pinterest’s Pin specs page gives no separate Idea Pin size and does not mention Idea Pins. Use the standard Pin limits instead: images at 2:3, video at 9:16 or 2:3, and 4 seconds to 5 minutes for video. Confirm the options you see in the editor, because Pinterest can change them.
How do I keep Pinterest image quality high?
Pinterest asks for high-resolution assets and warns that blurry or distorted images are hard to read. Export once at full quality, crop to 2:3, then compress a single time. In Smol, start at JPG quality 75 and raise it to 85 for text-heavy graphics. Never recompress an already compressed JPEG repeatedly.
Can I upload HEIC photos from my iPhone to Pinterest?
HEIC is not among the image file types on Pinterest’s Pin specs page, which names BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WEBP. Switch to JPEG first. In Smol, use Compress with output JPG, not Convert, so your quality setting applies and metadata is stripped by default. The HEIC guide on this site covers other routes.
