LinkedIn Image Size: Limits for Photos, Video and PDF Carousels

LinkedIn takes photos up to 5 MB, video up to 5 GB and carousel PDFs up to 100 MB and 300 pages, but a post that is rejected or blurry usually missed one of those. Smol resizes photos and banners, compresses video and shrinks carousel PDFs on your Mac before you upload.
  • Photos and banners resized to LinkedIn’s pixel guidance, quality set by you
  • Carousel PDFs shrunk with a preset, then checked against 100 MB
  • Phone and screen-recording video compressed to MP4 before upload
  • Nothing leaves your Mac, so client decks stay private

The LinkedIn image size limit for a single photo is 5 MB, with a minimum of 552 × 276 pixels and 1080 pixels wide recommended. Video goes up to 5 GB, a document post up to 100 MB and 300 pages, and the profile banner is 1584 × 396. All of it is from LinkedIn’s own help pages, with the Smol setting beside each.

What is the LinkedIn image size limit for photos?

LinkedIn’s help page for sharing photos says “The size limit for an upload is 5 MB”. The photo must be at least 552 × 276 pixels, and LinkedIn recommends 1080 pixels wide. The aspect ratio can run from 3:1 to 4:5 (width to height).

A multi-photo post takes up to 20 photos and renders at a maximum ratio of 4:5, for example 640 × 800 pixels. Photos cannot be resized or edited after they are posted, so fix the size before you publish. Separately, LinkedIn’s supported-types page lists images as GIF, HEIF/HEIC (iOS only), JPEG, PNG and WEBP, up to 36 megapixels.

The recommended LinkedIn banner size is 1584 × 396 pixels, as JPG or PNG, under 8 MB, per LinkedIn’s background photo page. That is a 4:1 strip, so a 4000-pixel photo has to be cropped before it is resized.

Crop to 4:1 in Preview or your design tool first, then let Smol bring the width to 1584. Smol’s fill mode crops to the box with no control over what is cut, so for a banner with a face or logo, crop yourself and use width. GIFs cannot be used for profile or background photos, per LinkedIn’s file types page.

Which Smol settings meet LinkedIn’s image and video limits?

Resize first, then set quality. Smol resizes images to fit inside 2000 × 2000 pixels unless you change it, which is already larger than LinkedIn’s 1080-pixel recommendation, so most feed images only need the quality set.

For scale, on 24 small test photos (768 × 512 film scans, default settings), Smol’s JPEGs came out 69.3% smaller. Camera and design-tool exports will land elsewhere. The method is on the benchmark page.

A LinkedIn carousel PDF, which LinkedIn calls a document post, can be 100 MB and 300 pages, with one document per post. PDFs with multiple layers must be flattened or merged. The document FAQ says you get a notification if the upload fails.

The cap is generous, but a large export from Canva, Figma or Keynote can still be slow to upload. Smol’s PDF presets are long-edge pixel caps of 600, 900, 1200, 1800 and 2400 pixels for Tiny, Small, Medium, Large and Original. A 1080 × 1350 page capped at 1200 becomes 960 × 1200, while Large leaves it at full size. Original is not lossless; it re-encodes. How the presets behave is covered in what the PDF presets actually do.

What about LinkedIn document post PDF size for text-heavy decks?

PDFs from some generators barely shrink at all, so do not promise yourself a percentage. Export, compress, then compare the sizes. If a deck came from a scanner, see compressing a scanned PDF.

What is the LinkedIn video size limit?

The LinkedIn video size limit is 5 GB, with a 75 KB minimum, per LinkedIn’s video sharing page. Maximum length is 15 minutes, resolution can run from 256×144 to 4096×2304, and MP4 is on the list of supported types.

A 4K iPhone clip can still upload slowly. Compress to MP4 with H.264 and the High label, which is CRF 24, or Web at CRF 28 for a smaller file, and lower the resolution if the source is 4K. Smol sets quality and resolution, not output bytes, so read the size afterward. Background in how to compress a video on Mac and H.265 versus H.264.

How do I prepare a week of LinkedIn posts in one pass?

Batch the week. Photos, the carousel PDF and a clip can go into Smol together, and the output lands beside each original.

  1. Collect the week’s files in one folder

Smol writes a copy with a _compressed suffix and, by default, leaves the originals alone.

  2. Crop banners and fix aspect ratios first

Keep feed images between 3:1 and 4:5. Smol resizes but does not choose the crop for you in width mode.

  3. Drag the folder in and set images to JPG

Quality 75 to 80, resize by width 1080. Set the PDF to Medium or Large and video to MP4.

  4. Run it and read the per-file sizes

Smol shows each file’s result. Anything near a cap gets a second run at a lower setting.

  5. Check metadata if the file is sensitive

Image metadata is stripped by default, including GPS, copyright and contact fields. Switch that off if you want your credit line kept.

  6. Upload the compressed copies

LinkedIn will not let you resize a photo after posting, so look at the preview before you publish.

What do LinkedIn creators use today?

Built-in tools handle a post a week fine. A Mac app earns its place when you batch, or when the PDF and video arrive with the photos.

Presets live on one Mac, so a team gets consistent output by writing the settings down and recreating the preset on each Mac. Team is $49 for three Macs; Enterprise is $20 a seat for 5 to 500 seats, per the pricing page.

When is Smol the wrong tool for LinkedIn content?

You post one image a month. Preview resizes a single photo for free, and LinkedIn’s 5 MB cap is easy to meet with an export from your design tool.

You need to edit a carousel. Smol does not edit, merge, split, sign or OCR PDFs. Fixing page order or a typo happens in Canva, Figma or Keynote, and then you compress.

You need pixel-identical images. Smol always re-encodes, with no lossless mode. For a lossless pass, the ImageOptim comparison explains what that tool saves.

You work on Windows or only on a phone. Smol is macOS only, so use the platform’s own export settings.

You expect a guaranteed byte count. Smol sets quality and pixel size, not output bytes. Check the result against LinkedIn’s limit every time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best LinkedIn image size for a post?

LinkedIn’s help page recommends photos 1080 pixels wide, at least 552 by 276, with an aspect ratio from 3:1 to 4:5 and a 5 MB upload limit. Multi-photo posts render at a maximum 4:5 ratio. In Smol, compress to JPG at quality 75 to 80 with width 1080, then check the output size.

What is the LinkedIn video size limit?

LinkedIn’s video sharing page gives a maximum of 5 GB and a minimum of 75 KB, up to 15 minutes, with resolution from 256 by 144 to 4096 by 2304. MP4 is supported. For faster uploads, compress to MP4 with H.264 in Smol and lower the resolution of a 4K source, then check the size.

What is the LinkedIn document post PDF size limit?

LinkedIn says a document’s file size cannot exceed 100 MB and 300 pages, and accepts PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX. Only one document goes in a post, and multi-layer PDFs must be flattened or merged. A large export can be shrunk in Smol with the Medium or Large preset.

What is the LinkedIn banner size?

LinkedIn recommends 1584 by 396 pixels for the profile background photo, as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. That is a 4:1 strip, so crop before you resize. GIFs cannot be used for background photos. In Smol, use Compress to JPG with a width of 1584 after cropping.

How do I make a LinkedIn carousel PDF smaller?

Export the deck as PDF, then run it through a compressor. In Smol, Medium caps the long edge at 1200 pixels and Large at 1800, so a 1080 by 1350 page stays full size under Large. Presets re-encode images, and vector-heavy decks shrink less, so compare sizes before posting.

Does LinkedIn accept HEIC photos from an iPhone?

LinkedIn’s supported-types page lists HEIF/HEIC as accepted on iOS only. To be safe on desktop, use Compress in Smol with output JPG, not Convert, so your quality and width settings apply. Image metadata, including GPS, is stripped by default.
