PDFelement Alternative for Mac: When You Only Need Compression
PDFelement is Wondershare’s full PDF editor for Mac: editing, OCR, signing, redaction, forms and a compress tool, all in one app. The usual reason to look for an alternative is that you opened it to shrink one file and found yourself weighing a plan that costs several times what that job is worth. We make Smol, a $29 Mac app that compresses and converts, and does nothing else to a PDF.
That last clause matters. If you edit, sign, redact or OCR PDFs, Smol is not a replacement and this page will say so. If you only need smaller PDFs, and maybe smaller photos and videos too, read on.

When PDFelement is the better choice
PDFelement is the better choice in four situations, and in each one buying Smol would not solve your problem.
You change what is inside the PDF. Fixing a typo in a contract, moving a logo, building a form: that is editing, and Smol does not edit. PDFelement lists editing, annotating and form work among its core tools.
You need OCR. PDFelement offers OCR, including batch OCR. Smol does not run OCR. It can shrink a scanned PDF, as compressing a scanned PDF explains, but it will not make the text searchable.
You sign, redact or protect documents. Smol does not redact. If your workflow ends with a signature or a blacked-out paragraph, PDFelement already covers it.
You work on Windows too. It has Windows, iPhone/iPad and Android versions. Smol is Mac only. If you already pay for PDFelement for those reasons, keeping it and using its compress tool is simply the sensible choice.
Is PDFelement worth it in 2026?
It is worth it if you use the editing and OCR tools, and hard to justify if you bought it to shrink files.
According to Wondershare’s Mac store page on 14 October 2026, there are quarterly, yearly, two-year and perpetual plans. Its Mac product page lists a US$129.99 perpetual license, while the store cards show several unlabeled prices per plan, so check the checkout total before you rely on any figure here. Each plan also offers a free trial of 1,000 AI uses, after which an optional AI add-on renews unless you cancel.
Set that against the job. If your need is a PDF under an email or upload limit, you are paying for an editor, an OCR engine and an AI assistant to use one button. Smol is $29 once for one Mac, and that covers PDFs, images, video and audio. The trade is capability: Smol is narrower, and we are not hiding that.
Wondershare also makes a claim on its Mac page that PDFelement costs 50% less than Adobe Acrobat. That is the vendor’s own comparison, and we have not checked it. For the Acrobat side, see our Acrobat alternatives for Mac.
What does PDFelement not do?
Judging by its own pages, it is a PDF product, not a general file-shrinking tool.
Its Mac page lists editing, converting, OCR, annotating, signing, compressing (single and batch), protecting and redacting. We found nothing there about compressing photos, video or audio, so if your folder holds screen recordings and HEIC files alongside PDFs, you would be running a second tool. Smol handles those in the same window; see how to compress a video on Mac and the best image compressor for Mac.
Some things Wondershare does not publish. Its pages do not describe PDFelement’s compression presets, state whether the free download limits compression, or give a release date for the latest Mac build, so we make no claim about them. Wondershare’s system requirements page gives macOS 11 to macOS 26 for the Mac build, while the product page gives both macOS 11 and macOS 10.15 as the minimum. Ask support which applies to your machine.
What does Smol do to a PDF?
It compresses it with one of five presets, and strips its metadata if you ask.
The presets are Tiny, Small, Medium, Large and Original. They are long-edge pixel caps of 600, 900, 1200, 1800 and 2400 px, not DPI targets, so the effective resolution depends on the page size, and “Original” is not lossless: it re-encodes and resamples above 2,400 px. Our presets explainer walks through each level. Scanned PDFs and PDFs exported from design tools tend to shrink well; some generator output barely changes. We do not promise a percentage for PDFs in general.
The output is a copy next to the original, so you keep the big file. Drop a whole folder and it runs as a batch, as in batch compressing PDFs on Mac. Stripping metadata is a separate operation, and the result is not forensically clean, which removing metadata from a PDFexplains in detail. If PDF compression is all you need, see the best PDF compressor for Mac for the wider field, including PDF Squeezer and Smallpdf.
Is Smol a good PDFelement alternative, and how do I switch?
There is nothing to migrate, because Smol does not read PDFelement’s settings or projects.
Install Smol, drag your PDFs in, pick a preset and run it. Your PDFelement files open as normal PDFs. If you edit or sign documents, keep PDFelement for that and send the finished file through Smol last. That pairing costs $29 on top of what you already own, and it is the arrangement we would suggest for anyone who needs both. Because there is no trial and no refunds, try a few of your own files against the presets on the homepage demo first, remembering the demo is not the app. Our guide to compressing a PDF without Adobe covers the other routes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best PDFelement alternative for Mac?
It depends on the job. For compressing PDFs, images, video and audio on your own Mac, Smol is $29 once with no account. For full PDF editing and OCR, you need another editor, since Smol does not edit, sign, redact or run OCR. Our best PDF compressor roundup lists the compression-only options.
Can Smol edit PDFs like PDFelement?
No. Smol compresses PDFs, converts a PDF to PNG or JPG (first page only), and strips document metadata. It does not edit text, merge, split, sign, redact or run OCR. If you need those, keep PDFelement or another PDF editor and use Smol only for shrinking the finished file.
Is PDFelement a subscription?
Not only. Wondershare's Mac store page lists quarterly and yearly plans, some of which auto-renew, plus a two-year plan and a perpetual license that includes PDFelement 13. The cards show several unlabeled prices, so confirm the total at checkout. An optional AI add-on is billed separately after a free trial of 1,000 AI uses.
Does PDFelement have a free trial and does Smol?
Wondershare offers a free download of PDFelement for Mac, though its page does not describe the trial limits, and each plan offers a free trial of 1,000 AI uses. Smol has no free trial and purchases are not refundable. The only free thing we offer is the in-browser demo on our homepage, which is not the app.
Does Smol upload my PDFs anywhere?
No. Smol runs on your Mac, with no account and no server, so PDFs are compressed locally and never uploaded. It needs macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon, or macOS 14 or later on Intel. A Solo license is $29 once for one Mac, with free updates and no subscription.
